These last words sum up the book pretty well. Jude is nervous about her move but gaining a new perspective (just a squint, not a complete change) and then manages to adjust to those changes with her new experiences. #NCHPedsReads

This chapter was hard to read. Those words resonate in a lot of us. When you feel that you belong, it‘s almost like not feeling anything, however, when you feel that you don‘t belong it consumes you and while days come and go, the emptiness stays. #nchpeds

When Jude said Americans love labels, that spoke to me because I‘ve experienced some of her feelings when moving to a new place. It‘s definitely intimidating, I hope she can learn to adjust to her environment.

I have been enjoying reading “Other words for home” by Jasmine Warga. Jude is trying to get acclimated to the American way of life. I took a picture of this excerpt here because I can‘t seem to get away from homophones and making connections from class to text. Can‘t wait to see what happens next!

Giovanny_Vargas I love this part when her teacher mentions how she dislikes English! It reminds me of our RED class where we learned that there are 26 letters in the alphabet but 44 sounds! #NCHPedsReads #FEBPedsReads 5y
CodyFordPEDS English is the trickiest language. Growing up, my grandad always used to revel in all of its odd rules and exceptions. Doesn‘t work for the teacher here as we should be encouraging students to love complexity like Jude does. @NCHPedsReads #FebPEDSreads 5y

Jude has made the move and left her family behind. She has overcome many obstacles and continues to in her new home. Being in a new country with a new language is difficult but throw in cultural differences and it‘s a whole other ball game! #NCHPedsReads #janPEDSreads

Jude is a young girl from Syria, an aspiring movie star and best friend to her cousin and brother, Fatima and Issa. She remembers the old Syria with bustling tourists, scents of money and French perfume however this summer will be different according to Fatima. Issa and baba‘s tension grows stronger when Issa is no longer welcome to ghadah. Issa and Baba argue about political change. Jude feels this has broken up her family.

kennedimartin This is a great summary!! I‘m so excited to read more into the book to see how the characters grow and to see how their relationships change. Thanks for sharing! #NCHPedsReads #JanPedsReads (edited) 5y
CodyFordPEDS Hey Jo! I agree that I‘m concerned for the family unit relationship that is in here. I think we all can relate that we have family members that think different both politically and actively than we do. I hope that Baba starts listening to Issa even if he disagrees. I think disagreeing but listening would make him a more informed and better father! @NCHPedsReads #JanPEDSReads 5y
yahavcohen Hey Jo! I think that this was an amazing summary and said very well. I hope we see change between the families relationship as we continue to read this book! 5y
