I always seem to read non-fiction/memoir on planes. This one kept me from having to chat with the weirdo next to me, but it wasn't my favorite. There was a lot to like, but her attitudes on race were cringeworthy.
My #favefemalecharacter is Lyra Silvertongue. She's fierce and brave, both selfish and selfless, tells lies but fights to find truth, and is a wonderful, terrible child. I love her.

Now ruining bookstores everywhere!
I watched the movie as a child, but the book (as usual) was so much better. I just read it for the first time and I'm in love.
The latest printrun of Hook's Revenge has some new bling. Can you spot it?
Finished copies have arrived! Only a few more weeks until giraffes ruin bookstores everywhere!
All the books that have recently ended up on my desk, piled into a stack. I used the bottom two to demonstrate second person POV for a class. The top two are my daughter's. The middle three I'm reading now, or intend to read soon. Time to clean up!
Vlad "the Impaler" Dracul (the historical figure that inspired Dracula), but reimagined as a teen girl. Easily my favorite YA of the year so far!
Once again, Mary Roach informs and entertains with science! This book inspired so many awesome dinner time conversations about penile transplants, military diarrhea, and medical maggots. (Good thing my family loves me.)
Perfect first day of summer read that had me up past my bedtime last night. Sweet, funny, but unflinching when it comes to difficult subjects. I loved it.
In this loose retelling of The Fisherman and His Wife, Charlie comes to discover that wishes are tricky, and that even magic can't fix everything—especially the problems in her family.
The story is told with sensitivity and respect for its intended audience. I could not recommend it more highly.
I've got my first hardcover copy of GIRAFFES RUIN EVERYTHING, along with a photo of the sneaky giraffe (and my irate mom) who started it all.
Get your copy August 16!
So nice of Kate Messner's cover designer to match my living room! I've been looking forward to this book for some time—a modern MG retelling of the fairytale The Fisherman and His Wife. Perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
I'm a big fan of audiobooks for long drives, durning housework & while building my dollhouse. I'm really into this one, the 2nd in the BARTIMAEUS trilogy. I fell in love with Jonathan Stroud's LOCKWOOD & CO. & am now enjoying his earlier work.
What ways do you enjoy books—without using actual books?
I always like having an Ebook going for phone reading in waiting rooms or in bed after my husband has turned off the light (elicits fewer "so bright!" complaints than my lamp or my old, trusty, clip-on book light).
Newest read is GRUNT, by Mary Roach. I've been a fan since STIFF.
Do you Ebook?
Great PW review for Giraffes Ruin Everything this morning! Hooray!

Forget treadmill desks. This is my treadmill reading chair. 😁
