Delphine Gaither is in 6th grade, taller than most of the boys in her class, has a new stepmom, an uncle home from Vietnam, a strict grandma, two younger sisters, and a poet-mother in CA who keeps telling her to "be eleven." And she really wants to see the Jackson 5 at Madison Square Garden This is the kind of historical middle grade fiction that any age can enjoy! So much compassion for all these characters and how hard growing up can be.

mandarchy Such a good book. You have to read the whole series. All good. 3y
merelybookish @mandarchy Yes! I read the first book a while ago but moving right on to 3y

I was so sad finishing this Gaither Sisters book, there‘s only one left! The time period really comes alive, we felt like we were all dancing along with the Jackson Five. Enjoyed by my 4 kids (and me) aged 8-14. Surely did!

The second book in Rita Williams-Garcia's trilogy about the Gaither sisters. I haven't read it yet, but enjoyed One Crazy Summer, the first book in the series. Great middle grade historical fiction about African-American girls growing up in the 1960s. #eleven #novemberbythenumbers @JoeStalksBeck @Tiffy_Reads

Cathythoughts I really love this title ( it could apply to any age) celebrate that age , be that age. (edited) 6y
merelybookish @Cathythoughts Yes. Good point...since many of us probably don't want to BE our age. (Like 44 🙄) But why not? When will I ever be 44 again? ☺️🤣 6y
Cathythoughts I‘m influenced by the book I just read , Roseanne is 100. And she is vital ( as she can be ) and very interested about what it is like to be 100. So I decided , rather than feeling like I‘m getting old ( 62 - not a word - shhhhh) I‘m going to get interested in my age (edited) 6y

merelybookish @Cathythoughts That book sounds great! And it is a much better way to live than bemoaning one's age and feeling old. 6y
Amie I love this trilogy! 6y
merelybookish @amie I need to read the last two. I thought the first one was so good! 6y

Finished this sequel to One Crazy Summer. I just love these Gaither girls! These books are categorized as middle grade, but their themes are anything but childish. And Williams-Garcia's writing is top notch.

This is book 2 of the trilogy & I have loved following these 3 sisters & experiencing life in the '60's thru their eyes. Looking forward to book three. 📚
