Hilarious and fun! A great way to introduce comics to a younger reader or a palate cleanser if you, like me, find yourself reading a lot of darker fare

As Ms. Toni says, this is required reading. I found it equally compelling via audiobook.

Captured the isolation and despair that can come with living in a new city and not knowing language, customs, train schedules, etc.

Sweetbitter: A novel | Stephanie Danler
Mehso-so

Danler does a remarkable job of creating clear settings. I wish I could see all of her characters so well. I found much of the character development hazy. I had a tough time understanding when exactly Tess went from being the new girl and constant screw-up to one of the best employees.

courtney I just finished this and I felt the same! Beautiful writing/setting but what made Tess so entitled close to the end? Also, Simone and Jake were severely underplayed. I feel like something between them was hinted at the entire book but we never get the full story 😤 8y

Modern Lovers | Emma Straub

I was more interested in the characters' pasts - the college-band portion of the book - than any of their current dilemmas.

Excellent. A rarely seen relationship between a woman and her hawk. Fantastic to dive into when you are in need of solitude

I finished listening to this during my hour+ commute today. A fantastic listen ... just make sure it's not dark when you hear the last few chapters. Sleep won't come easy.

A quick and honest take on Samuelsson's journey so far. Over-reliance on some phrases became irksome, but overall, an engaging and enjoyable read

After finishing Hamilton: The Revolution, I'm returning to Jane land with both Re Jane and Jane Steele

LSTMiller The audiobook narrator is a bit stilted. I felt myself wanting Jane's story to spin out faster. Unfortunately, this put up a frustrating wall between me and the writing. I might need to go back and read through a number of passages to get the feel of them 8y

One of the many reasons I love this book is the sense of familiarity surrounding the plague and the way people reacted to it. Also, I worked at the Public during the production of KING LEAR that inspired the production in the book, so the hauntings of those characters were incredibly familiar.

I usually race through books, especially when they're this good, but I parsed this out one out over the last year and finally finished last night. An incredible read.

1Q84 | Haruki Murakami
post image
Pickpick

In 9/2012, our tiny book club of two met for the first time to discuss Murakami's 1Q84. We talked about the (over?)use of common motifs in HM's work: cats, foot fetishes, time, isolation, but overall, we both loved it, esp. the use of magical realism

daniellemohlman I met you right before this! You were both carrying this massive book around to Page to Stage. 8y
