1Q84
1Q84 | Haruki Murakami
Murakami is like a magician who explains what he's doing as he performs the trick and still makes you believe he has supernatural powers . . . But while anyone can tell a story that resembles a dream, it's the rare artist, like this one, who can make us feel that we are dreaming it ourselves. The New York Times Book Review The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 Q is for 'question mark.' A world that bears a question. Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled. As Aomame's and Tengo's narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell's1Q84 is Haruki Murakami's most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

I can definitely relate to this quote from 1Q84. Do you ever think about something so much that you get to a point where you can‘t bear the thought of talking about it with someone else?

conny @Crimson613 If you‘re okay with e-books, you can try Archive.org or OpenLibrary.org. A lot of JP classics aren‘t in my local library anymore as well so I usually look for them online to borrow & read. 3w

I‘m resuming my marathon read of 1Q84. Like the other novels I‘ve read by Murakami, there are many common themes including a dreamlike atmosphere and discussion on reality vs. dreams themselves.

I‘m about 350 pages in, only about 700 more pages to go!

Book 2: 1Q84

You will read many fantasy books but there will be none like 1Q84. Its mind bending plot, complex protagonist. Murakami, like most of his novels, creates a unique and addictive world. The book of this size can be boring at times but the thrills it gives is beyond measure.

I love fantasy and I think it is largely because of the beauty of this book, the plot which is mind boggling always remains with you.

Hazel2019 Yes! I absolutely loved 1Q84. The length of it is really necessary. Can‘t imagine being satisfied with only a short stay in that universe. 4w
Shamzi @Hazel2019 Each character had a strong story arc and in order for it be that good, it had to this long. Also I read it as a single book, it actually has 3 volumes!! 4w

Loved 1Q84! I am a fan of the Murakami universe full of intriguing characters all of whom you get to know really well. I even liked the unlikeable ones in the end! 😁 And I have 2 more items to add to the #MurakamiBingo - people looking at their hands and people with weirdly shaped heads 🤔 😂

Hi Everyone! I can‘t believe it has been a month since I last posted! I need some sort of buddy system to keep me going!

I‘m reading 1Q84 by the legendary Haruki Murakami now! I started reading it on eBook from Libby, but my friends from the lab were teasing me about the joys of paper, so I capitulated and bought the trade version.

Sometimes you just miss holding a real book, you know?

Anyways, I hope I can be more active on Litsy!

BarbaraBB Welcome back! Good to have you here. Are you enjoying 1Q84? 2mo
Pruzy @BarbaraBB Yes! I‘m enjoying it very much. It is probably the best Murakami novel I have read so far! Have you read it and did you like it? 2mo
CarolynM Nice to see you back 👋 2mo

Pruzy @CarolynM Thank you very much 2mo
BarbaraBB I read it when it first came out, in three parts, so I had to wait in between until the next was published. I loved the first and was waiting in anticipation for the next ones but they couldn‘t live up to those high hopes, although I did enjoy them. My favorite remains 2mo
Pruzy @BarbaraBB Wow, I can‘t imagine reading this book with long waits in between. Would definitely mess up the flow. I have heard countless good things about The Wind-up Bird Chronicles so I should most definitely read that next! 2mo
Well-ReadNeck Honestly, a fat book like that one screams ebook to me!!! 2mo
Pruzy @Well-ReadNeck Haha, it surprisingly smaller than I expected, but the pages are almost bible thin 2mo
ElizaMarie I‘m still working on this one. So I love paper books better and have a hard time with ebooks because the screen and stuff.. but... this book is so big that it‘s hard for me to lug around so it‘s been pushed aside multiple times. I do want to finish it and I like it so far but... it‘s just so cumbersome! 2mo
Pruzy @ElizaMarie Yes, I definitely won‘t be putting this one in my bag for day to day travel! There was a box set available in three thin volumes, but I think I already finished the first volume electronically so I elected for the doorstop! 2mo
Cathythoughts I havnt read this one .. but read my first one by this author this last summer... really enjoyed it (edited) 1mo
Pruzy @Cathythoughts I can confidently tell you that this one is much better! 1mo

How long did it take you to read this book? I started it in March... I'm only around page 450 or so. I love Murakami. I don't know why I'm so slow at reading this. Thoughts? Maybe my arms get tired trying to hold it up. 🤷🏻‍♀️

zezeki It took me a about a half year to read it actually. All there parts are seperate books though, at least copies from my library. I love Murakami's work, but he isn't always easiest to get through, I think you need to be in the right mood for him. 5mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser I borrowed this on audiobook as well as a hard copy so if I wasn't reading I was listening. But I'm still not finished 10 months later, I think I got 3/4 through, so I'm into the last book. It was my first Litsy post. I gave it up a few months ago but I hope to finish it one day. I do recommend the audiobook version if that interests you. It is very easy to listen to. 4mo

One moon in 1984, two moons in 1Q84. Odd things happen. Is it a parallel or alternate reality? Murakami takes the reader through 925 pages to try to figure it out. Murakami is surreal as usual. Maybe a little longer than it needed to be, but I still liked this!

My #1001Books current read. There are four pages that have this blue tape —somewhat transparent— at the top. At first I thought they were repaired pages (I bought it used and was unaware of this at the time), but there are no tears. I‘m now wondering if this is the messed-up result of a new roll of paper being attached during the manufacturing process? Anyone know what I mean?

Leftcoastzen Very Odd. No clue 8mo

I am continuing my love affair with Murakami. The story takes place in an alternate 1984. I enjoyed getting to know all the characters and back stories in this lengthy book. The techniques of alternating points of view for each chapter and ending on a cliff-hanger also worked well for me. I eagerly looked forward to each chapter. I thought the ending was appropriate. I look forward to reading more by this author. #reading1001 #1001books

Curiouser_and_curiouser Good luck with 1Q84! It's a good one and you're lucky you won't have to renew two times and then return it, only to come back the next day to reborrow it, or wait for the person who reserved it to return it so it can be your turn again which was what I had to do as the book was so long. The lean and mean pulp fiction fan in me would have preferred around 400 less pages, but this magical tale of moon-crossed lovers, populated by Little People, ghost writers, assassins and a gallery of other memorable characters, is a great read.
