A Field Guide to Awkward Silences
A Field Guide to Awkward Silences | Alexandra Petri
11 posts | 6 read | 18 to read
Washington Post columnist Alexandra Petri turns her satirical eye on her own life in this hilarious new memoir... Most twentysomethings spend a lot of time avoiding awkwardness. Not Alexandra Petri. Afraid of rejection? Alexandra Petri has auditioned for Americas Next Top Model. Afraid of looking like an idiot? Alexandra Petri lost Jeopardy! by answering Who is that dude? on national TV. Afraid of bad jokes? Alexandra Petri won an international pun championship. Petri has been a debutante, reenacted the Civil War, and fended off suitors at a Star Wars convention while wearing a Jabba the Hutt suit. One time, she let some cult members she met on the street baptize her, just to be polite. Shes a connoisseur of the kind of awkwardness that most people spend whole lifetimes trying to avoid. If John Hodgman and Amy Sedaris had a babythey would never let Petri babysit it. But Petri is here to tell you: Everything you fear is not so bad. Trust her. Shes tried it. And in the course of her misadventures, shes learned that there are worse things out there than awkwardnessand that interesting things start to happen when you stop caring what people think.

I enjoyed this read but not as much as I expected. The author is witty but I had lofty expectations - this seems to be the norm with books categorized as humorous. So it is likely an it‘s not you, it‘s me situation since despite my tepid review I now follow the author on Twitter.

Got some awesome #bookmail today from @Kappadeemom ! 🤗 Underneath the journal is this month‘s #horrorpost book. And because she is awesome she threw in the tagged book for me. Thank you so much, it looks really funny! Can‘t wait to read both of these. ☺️💚🤗

My struggle every time I have to be social...especially when no one is talking, people are on their phones, or watching tv. Thank you to ebooks that have helped this issue. 😉

Ps. This book is amazing and awkward and quirky. ❤️

Notafraidofwords I feel your pain. People think of you pull out a book that it means your bored and that's not true. 7y
JPeterson @Notafraidofwords Right?! 😡 Totally unfair, haha. 7y
DuckOfDoom I honestly don't care anymore. If everyone is on their smartphones playing games or messaging, I can read my book. It gives the opportunity to talk enthusiastically about my book when asked, nobody would want to hear a story about Candychrush, right? 7y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I have one pair of friends that are glued to their phones anytime we go out... I think it's rude - so now I just get my book out and read... it works better than getting annoyed at them ☺️ 7y
obviateit True story- I read a book at my Junior prom. It was probably my favorite prom. 😄 7y
WordWaller This is what the Kindle app is for!! No joke, I'll burst out a book when it looks like I'm just scrolling like everyone else (: 7y
Eyelit Truth! 7y
MaleficentBookDragon I'm right there with you. If everyone else can be on their phones, why can't I read? 7y
Faibka Exactly! 😃 7y
JPeterson @DuckOfDoom Exactly! But candycrush is so exciting...(I kid, I kid). 🍭🍭 @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Haha, yes! Such a better solution! @obviateit That is awesome! @WordWaller I've been slowly doing this...I just can't get over that I don't like staring at my phone for long periods of time in company 🙄 @MaleficentTheBookDragon Right?!? 😒 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag It actually shames them far more than if I actually called them out for their phone use... it's kind of funny! 7y

Just purchased this book and began reading it - the last time I truly got lost and enjoyed it was in New Mexico. Incredible experience. #rebeccasolnit #book #wanderlust #searching #gettinglost #lost #nonfiction

Fun read by a fellow DC theatre creator (and birthday twin)!
