Dante's tour guide through hell is that famous Christian, Virgil (died 19 BC) and the 3 residents of the center of Hell are responsible for the death of JC (Jesus Christ & Julius Caesar). Dante brought a lot with him to the afterlife- yet he gleefully describes hell, citing the unchanging Bible...

The author, a writer for the Batman animated series, tells the true story of the physical and emotional toll he suffered following a brutal attack using characters from that world to personify his feelings (some helpful, some destructive). I'm not much of a comic book reader, but this was great.

Far fetched, with a very uneven writing style and too many plot holes.

Unlike Tom Foreman's memoir, this author doesn't have much in the way of insight or humor. He's a great runner and he'll tell you all about it. Women think he's quite a catch and he'll tell you about that too. His family likes supporting him, which seems to be their sole purpose. That's about it.

The author's hilarious self-deprecating style really sets this book from other running memoirs I've read. At points he seems to be describing himself as someone who achieves greatness because he is too dumb to quit. Inspiring and fun read.

A fascinating book about a critical period in world history. Thanks to voluminous records kept by Mussolini's government and the recently opened Vatican archives it's packed with firsthand accounts, making it read like a novel. My copy is heavily dog eared and underlined.

Bleak and tense at the same time, like Flannery O'Connor meets Grey Gardens. If you've read other Shirley Jackson stories (The Lottery, The Haunting of Hill House) you know what you're in for- a fascinating, disorienting view into unforgettable characters.

A great, surprisingly modern play. Greek gods seem like aliens: powerful but not infallible and having unclear (possibly malignant) intentions. Also the story written 400 BC about a son of a God born to a human mom who comes to town punishing nonbelievers may have inspired, let's say "later works."

It's easy to see why there are college courses devoted to this book. Through his characters the author sets up different philosophies of life and then turns them all loose on each other. Somehow he pulls this off without being preachy, and telling a great story.

Some profound thoughts, some confusing thoughts, some nonsense.

Inspiring book about how to live a good life, and why this is the rational thing to do. Many people have noticed some of the parallels between this vein of stoicism and Buddhist thought.

Man oh man this has to be one of the most pretentious books I have ever read. Large portions are devoted to the author dwelling on how deep he is and how his clueless friends and family need to have his deep thoughts revealed slowly over time in order for their shallow minds to grasp them.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Darn, and it always shows up on lists of books you should read. 9y
Desha Hmm...I'm glad someone brought this up on the review page. I'm about a quarter of the way through and I've been feeling the same way! Particularly the fact that he's so hard on his fellow trip buddy for not knowing how to maintain his own motorcycle...then a few pages later tells us that he was in the same position a few years ago and was ripped off by the motorcycle mechanics. He obviously learned "the hard way" himself...? 8y

I loved the dream-like passages, especially the closing paragraph. This is one of my favorite books.
