My first Murakami. Loved how the author built and illustrated the relationships between the characters. I identified much with the narrator. This is a good book to read about loneliness and unrequited love. I still don't know what to think of the ending though.

Why do people have to be this lonely? What's the point of it all? Millions of people in this world, all of them yearning, looking to others to satisfy them, yet isolating themselves. Why? Was the earth put here just to nourish human loneliness?

This exceeded my expectations. I loved it, devoured it in a day. You know you have read a good one when not only the plot captivates you, but also the characters and setting. I never would have imagined Holland in the 1600s to be interesting.

The author skillfully weaved a backstory leading to the expression of the girl with the pearl earring. Though it is a work of fiction, I will be reminded of her story whenever I see the painting. It is her.

I gave it plenty of chances, thinking it would get better. But upon reaching chapter 17, I threw in the towel. Disappointing and frustrating. Needless to say, I hated it. Wanted to throw it across the room. Burn it, even. Sacrilege, I know. I guess I expected too much.

It's not about the plot, I can stomach rape and murder scenes. But the author's writing was a pain. The flow of the story and the overly sentimental lines were just bad.

angel1 I didn‘t like this book either!! 7y

This really resounded to me, as I feel that I am stuck in a limbo. Gotta pick a fig, Anna. You don't have all day.

It gives a good account of the inner workings of a depressed person's mind. Sad yet insightful, Sylvia Plath beautifully writes about the breakdown of a smart and talented young woman.

The narration by Maggie Gyllenhaal is done very well.

Though the book's mood is somber and morose, I found it oddly comforting. I will definitely go back to it in the future.

Those with depression or suicidal thoughts should stay wary of this book.

Running out of shelf space so I placed some of my books on top of my cabinet. How have I not thought of this before?
