Just in time for International Women‘s Day I finished this book. A fictional exploration of the life of poet and novelist Joy Davidman, and her relationship with CS Lewis. A passionate, fiercely intelligent woman living in a time that often punished those attributes in women. The fictional voices didn‘t always ring true but I plan on reading more of her work and it has inspired me to attempt the sonnet form when I have a little breathing room.

So what would a fantasy riff on Sherlock Holmes look like where Holmes is a moody sorceress named Shaharazad Haas who smokes incessant amounts of Valentino‘s Good Rough Shag and Watson is Captain John Wyndham who has recently returned from his time serving with the Company of Strangers at the Unending Gate, a “kaleidoscope of ever shifting, otherworldly battlefields” fighting the forces of the Empress of Nothing. Pretty darn hilarious that‘s what.

So incredibly sad, strange and lovely all at the same time. A tale of sacred discontent.

PS How do I format pictures in Litsy???

sheshedbooks What do you mean by "format"? Image size? 5y
cirrusrider @greenreads yes! Every picture I take gets its top and bottom chopped off, I can‘t shrink anything to fit despite looking at editing options. Its probably painfully obvious but in my defense, 5 kids, little solo time, yadda yadda 🤪 5y
sheshedbooks @cirrusrider Ah, Litsy's photo editor lacks image resizing. It only crops (chops) the photo to the allowed size. You might want to use another app for image resizing/editing. I use Canva app, but I often see some Littens use PicCollage. I think the size is same as Instagram's, 1080x1080 pixels. Also, you can always edit/add photos later on your posts so there's no pressure to have it right away. 😄 5y
cirrusrider @greenreads ahhhh got it thank you!! 5y

I have had the slowest reading period ever in my entire life. So much for impressing Litsy folks 😂.
I read this book slowly, bit by bit, and it was life giving. I am unpacking old traumas in therapy and normally my go to to numb myself from pain is diving headfirst into fiction...this was my way helping myself not to do that. “Strengthening what is whole in each other”...I can‘t think of a better way to live.

Hmmm, January isn‘t even over and already I am failing to stick to my resolution of sticking to the tbr books on my own shelves. 😬 #thriftstorebookhaul

Ok, my life is nucking futs right now but this cartoon from The New Yorker was instant happiness. I think absurd forms of humor are certifiable therapy. Sigh.

I‘ve been solo wrangling progeny this weekend and have yet to be reunited with my mister due to bad weather ferry cancellations. So. Chocolate Eruption cake. Comfort read. Brandy.

Oh I‘ve missed this series! I read the whole 7 books released currently in the early weeks and long, looooong nights of December 2018 when my youngest was born. I tore through them, there is so much to love- London, the clever, clever commentary, magic, police procedurals, layers of history, architecture, geography...Mr Aaronovitch has a very big brain and knows how to use it! 😂 A friend loaned me this novella and I was in bliss.

I loved @marleed ‘s post showing the bookshelves in her reading room, with the very cool visual idea of flipping her read books pages out, and tbr books spines out, so here is a pic of my favourite bookshelf in our house. One day I hope I have a real reading room all to myself, but until then this is my portal to a thousand worlds, gate of a thousand sorrows and a thousand joys, window of wisdom and gathering of old and dear friends.

marleed Oh what a great look at your thousand worlds - and your words a beautiful! ...I realized in turning my read books pages out for a spin that I much less overwhelmed by my TBR spines-out mountain as it peaks through my pages-out read cloud of books! 5y

I find myself in the ludicrous position of having swept into 2020 with the firm intention of staying away from social media only to trip over litsy on the second day of the new year. Giant facepalm. Still, I hope to harness the superpowers of the litsy app and community to aid me in my quest to have my best reading year ever, despite 5 children, less personal time than in any previous year of my life, and some ongoing health challenges. Here I go!

sheshedbooks Good luck and welcome to Litsy! 📚👋 5y
