The Mourning Road to Thanksgiving | Larry Spotted Crow Mann
Pickpick

This book reminds me of a Native American take on the movie Christmas Vacation. Less silly... but it still had those campy, over-the-top vibes. The protagonist did some things that I disagree with, such as wanting to end the celebration of Thanksgiving.

I'm part Native American (mostly Cherokee) and have been learning more about indigenous peoples & cultures. I appreciate this book for approaching serious subjects with education and engagement!

dewbertb I finished this book back in early December, but I've been procrastinating about writing the review 😉 7d

I usually avoid romance, but a steampunk story with kraken infesting the canals of Venice - such as this - deserves an exception.

TieDyeDude Oh my! That is definitely a synopsis that grabs your attention 😅 3w

This was a fun short story. Now I kind of want to read the rest as a novel. A military fiction with Nephilim could be really interesting!?

Hole in the Sky: A Novel | Daniel H. Wilson
Panpan

This book started off reminding me of the 3 Body Problem, with Cherokee people instead of the Chinese. I had high hopes and was really enjoying the story... until the "impact" (about 60% in). After that the novel became very odd, dark, and left me disappointed! Despite the great beginning, "Hole in the Sky" deserves a thumbs down from me ?

TieDyeDude Bummer! A quick glance at Goodreads seems like several people had similar thoughts. (edited) 1mo

Fight Oligarchy | Senator Bernie Sanders

This audiobook being narrated by Bernie, himself, was the feature that sold me on this version (versus the ebook). I was given some new things to think about. I also liked briefly learning about billionaires around the world. I did find the book a little too much on the negative, Trump-bashing side. I am definitely not a Trump lover... but he & his loser cronies don't deserve the attention or energy they get!

BREACH: Paranormal Defense | Amelie C. Langlois
Mehso-so

This book started out as interesting and fun; combining military fiction, cosmic horror, and lite sci-fi. Around halfway, the story added an awkward overarching plot that was unnecessary & unwelcome. I'm not all that squeamish... but things got really gory! 🤢 In summary: the first half was pretty good; the second half, not so much.

I enjoyed this short story; it was an interesting blend of steampunk, fantasy (sans the elves & dwarfs), and Arabic culture. I especially liked the cosmic horror and ancient Egyptian elements. I'm wanting more so much that my very next read will be something else from the Dead Djinn Universe!

My first #Kobo e-reader arrived yesterday. I've been breaking it in with "A Dead Djinn in Cairo" by P. Djèlí Clark ??

Any Kobo fans / users out there?

SamAnne I‘ve quit Amazon and Kindle. I am transition to Kobo but on an I-pad. I also deleted Goodreads, which I have regretted and signed back up. But lost 15 years of book lists and reviews. Am infuriated that by ending my Amazon account I have lost access to many books on Kindle that I PAID for. Eff Kindle. 2mo
dewbertb @SamAnne Have you heard of or tried the StoryGraph? It's supposed to be a solid Goodreads alternative. I started using it a couple months ago. But they are so-so on Kobo books 😒 2mo
SamAnne @dewberb I am on StoryGraph and there are things I really like about it. But I found myself missing Goodreads, esp. since I have so many friends on it that haven‘t migrated to StoryGraph. And there are some virtual book clubs I enjoy on Hoodreads. Dammit! 2mo

Interesting audiobook that was clear, thought-provoking, and presented me with other material to read.

1984 | George Orwell
post image

I started reading George Orwell's "1984" over the weekend (I never actually read it in school ?) It was recommended to me in honor of the recent No King's Rallies. The three slogans of the Party are eerily familiar:

1. War is Peace
2. Freedom is Slavery
3. Ignorance is Strength

#TooRelevant ?

aa_guer2021 Indeed. I‘ve said more times than I have wanted to that books such as this are a warning ⚠️ not an instruction manual. 2mo
TimEW I‘ve been meaning to read 1984 for 50 years. But, I have seen the 1956 and the 1984 films. Those movies gave me the general idea. 😊🙏 2mo
