Do I want a #kobo (Clara BW)? I absolutely don‘t *need* one. I already own a kindle and a nook. Talk to me people. How do you feel about kobo?

Ruthiella What‘s your reasoning? What is the advantage over Kindle and Nook? 1w
Sace @Ruthiella I‘m not that logical 😂. I really think it‘s just a matter of wanting one. In all likelihood I will talk myself out of it since I don‘t have a solid reason beyond curiosity. 1w
rubyslippersreads One advantage to buying from the Kobo bookstore is that it‘s easy to back up your ebooks and add them to your Kindle. However, you don‘t need a Kobo device to do that. 1w

Aims42 @rubyslippersreads 🤯🤯🤯🤯 I learned so much from your comment! 1. Didn‘t know Kobo had a bookstore 2. Didn‘t know I could add them to my Kindle! Thank you for sharing!! -Runs to Kobo‘s bookstore- (edited) 1w
rwmg I've had a Kobo since 2012. I had to replace it with a Kobo Aura, which has more memory, in 2016 and I'm still using that one. I like the fact that I can buy from any e-retailer while Kindle restricts you to Amazon. I inherited my mother's Kindle but I don't use it nearly as much. 1w
ImperfectCJ Ditto what @rwmg said about not being restricted to Amazon. Since 2020, I've cut out all Amazon purchases unless I get a gift card, so my Kobo is part of that boycott, but I also find the Kobo more responsive than my Paperwhite, and I love the seamless integration with Overdrive (I get most of my ebooks from the library and magaing that on the Kindle was a pain). 1w
RaeLovesToRead I want a Kobo too (I have a Kindle Oasis) but what stopped me was when I realised I also wanted a Boox and a Remarkable 🤣🤣 I realised my gadget lust would never be sated!!!!!! If you have the money, I say go for it! But if it will mean you won't be able to afford food, then maybe hang fire!!! 1w
Aims42 @rubyslippersreads Thank you! I‘ll give it a watch during my lunch break today 🤩🙌 1w
Sace @rubyslippersreads I‘m also learning a lot. I will have to watch that video. 1w
Sace @RaeLovesToRead gadget lust is real! 1w
Sace @ImperfectCJ I also want to drastically cut down my Amazon purchases. I have a nook that I‘ve started using more regularly, but it‘s a little clunky. Also B&N will randomly cancel an order requiring me to call and verify info and then to place the order again. I get tired of jumping through hoops. 1w
Sace @rwmg So you would say they are reliable? 1w
Pruzy You don‘t need it, I‘ve been using my 2013 Kobo Aura for over ten tears and it‘s still almost as good as when I bought it. The longevity on ereaders is phenomenal. 1w
Pruzy I guess that is a case for them being reliable though 😆 1w
ImperfectCJ @RaeLovesToRead Gadget lust...yep. I've been eyeing a Supernote Nomad as a one-stop for journaling and e-reading. I've only kept myself from getting one by being uncertain that the reading experience would equal the Kobo (well, and because when I was initially tempted they'd temporarily stopped shipping to the US because of tariff uncertainty, which gave me the pause I needed to process my doubts). 1w
RaeLovesToRead @ImperfectCJ Supernote Nomad, eh? ....... 👀 1w
ImperfectCJ @RaeLovesToRead Boox, eh?...😁 1w
RaeLovesToRead @ImperfectCJ if only I was a slightly more popular YouTuber.... then i could buy them all and do a comparison review video!!!!! Or if i was really popular I could ask them to send me one to review........ 1w
ImperfectCJ @Sace I suspect that @RaeLovesToRead and I are not the best sources for advice about this, unless you want lots more gadget ideas. 1w
willaful My Kobo has some features I really like, like being given the option to search in the current book, wikipedia or google, showing the due dates of my library books in the library view, and showing the charging status when charging, But I dislike how library books get added to my permanent library and I have to go through several steps to delete them, so I mostly read on my old kindle. 1w
ImperfectCJ @RaeLovesToRead I love that idea! If I had more money to throw around, I would buy you all of them so you could do a comparison review video. Technically, I guess I could do my own in that case, but I'm not remotely a YouTuber. I do have a blog that a few people read, though...perhaps it would build character for my kids to pay their own way through college... 1w
RaeLovesToRead @ImperfectCJ Woo!!! Yes. I need to find a rich sponsor don't I? To fund my "project" haha. When you think about how many millions of pounds that Christo and Jean-Claude spent on wrapping up buildings for art, I suspect that my own projects are relatively modest! 1w
ImperfectCJ @willaful I agree, that's an annoying part of using the Kobo. It's a little simpler to remove/archive them on the website than on the Kobo itself, but it's still more clicks than is optimal. Batch edit would be wonderful. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I love my Kobo Libra Colour! I prefer it to my Kindle Paperwhite mainly because of the real buttons you press to turn the pages. Connecting a Kobo to multiple libraries is complicated and a pain but it‘s doable, and now that it‘s done, getting Libby ebooks on my Kobo is even easier than my Kindle. I also love that the Kobo supports Pocket reader, but sadly Pocket is being shut down. 1w
rwmg @Sace I sometimes think about getting a colour model since mine is obviously a b/w one, being 9 years old. But I don't read graphic novels or manga much. And if I think colour is important for a particular book, I can just switch to the Kobo app on my tablet.

But yes, the one I have still works just as well as when I first got it. The battery doesn't hold the charge for quite as long but that decline isn't really an inconvenience.
1w
AnnCrystal I looked into kobo for library books. Liked their eco device option (not sure if that option is still available). And liked the idea of not being attached to one bookshop, and that I can read independent published e-books. Then realized that even digital library books are timed and have waiting lists 🤔, I'm such a slow reader 😂...it was the main reason I wanted it so I just decided to remain paperbook loyal 📚💝. 1w
shanaqui I love my Kobo. I also have a slightly older Onyx Boox device, from which I can access Kindle, Kobo, and various other reading apps because it's built on Android -- but I find I like Kobo's interface and customisability best. Mine's a Libra Colour, though.

I wish they'd kept doing Kobo Minis, and updated them with e.g. backlights. I loved those.

Oh, and I am enjoying the Kobo Plus program for borrowing books.
6d
Sace @AnnCrystal my library doesn‘t use overdrive/libby. I‘ll have to see if kobo could work with hoopla/cloud library. 6d
Sace @shanaqui I‘ve heard really good things about the Libra Colour. 6d
AnnCrystal @Sace double check...I don't believe kobo does ??? (edited) 6d
rubyslippersreads @Sace I don‘t know about Cloud Library, but Hoopla doesn‘t work with e-ink devices. 5d

Pickpick

This was a comforting, cosy read which was what I needed. Perhaps a little stronger in its first half than the second but gentle and heartwarming.

#kobo

LoverOfLearning Sounds like a great cozy read! 4mo

While the world enters its Rats Fighting In A Sack publically era, I am getting back into my favourite Litsy challenges and buddy reads to try and cope.

First up is a re read of Making Money for #OokBookClub with @julesG (discussion starts 7th March).

Also my second time reading The Stand for the #LosersClub with @BarkingMadRead
I first read The Stand in February 2020 so I'm forming a habit of turning to it in, ahem, "interesting times"

#kobo

julesG Ook! 4mo

catiewithac Which kind of Kobo did you get? I‘m looking to replace my kindle paper white. 💪🏼 4mo
Lcsmcat @catiewithac I ordered the Libra Color. It‘s not here yet, but I‘ll let you know once I have it. ❤️ 4mo
TheBookHippie @Lcsmcat yes please advise!!! 4mo
Amiable @Lcsmcat @AmyG As a former newspaper journalist, I‘ve been holding on in solidarity with the WaPo reporters who are trying to do their jobs. Bezos doesn‘t make his fortune with WaPo. It‘s just a tax write-off for him. When subscriptions plummet, it‘s the newsroom staff that suffers with layoffs. I‘ve been there, done that. But Bezos‘ bullsh!t today with the op-ed directive crossed the line for me. I can‘t do it anymore. 🤬 4mo
Deblovestoread Just finished downloading all my books today. Bozos will not longer get any $$ from me. Just a drop in the bucket but going to put my money where my mouth is. Look forward to your post about your new kobo. 4mo
Lcsmcat @Amiable I didn‘t drop my subscription lightly, but editorial decisions made it clear where his loyalty lay, and it wasn‘t with the truth. Very sad, and I hope some new sources for news will emerge and employee those dedicated journalists. 4mo
Amiable @Deblovestoread That‘s how I feel. Some of my coworkers have rolled their eyes for several years at my insistence on boycotting certain companies—basically with the attitude of “what difference does your single purchase make?” I say it‘s one of the things I‘m able to control, and it makes me feel better to make those choices. 4mo
Lcsmcat @Amiable @Deblovestoread Exactly. My purchases might be a drop in the bucket, but if we all get together, they‘re not. And I‘m doing something. Fascists and other dictators thrive when good people feel helpless. 4mo
DogMomIrene @Lcsmcat @catiewithac I‘ve had my Kobo Libra Color for months now. Maybe a year. Love it. I bought the stylus, but I never use it. I haven‘t used the notating/journaling features. If I were a student, I could see using them. But highlighting works for me. I do miss the Kindle option to capture highlights in shareable graphics. That‘s convenient. But I‘ll type future quotes to share from Kobo. 4mo
Lcsmcat @DogMomIrene Good to know! I‘ve read on the Kobo app but this will be my first device. 4mo
rwmg @DogMomIrene Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but to share highlights from my Kobo, I open the Kobo app on my tablet then screenshot the page and crop it down as necessary. Then send/post it like any other image. (edited) 4mo
DogMomIrene @rwmg I see how that would work. It‘s not really as aesthetically pleasing as I would prefer. That‘s what I think the Kindle app does better. When I select a highlight, I‘m given a few choices for how I‘d like it to look. “Kindle Quotes” with different colored backgrounds, fonts, and it always includes title & author. I‘m a picky pants about aesthetics, especially readability, so this is the one feature I miss when I‘m using my Kobo. 4mo
Lcsmcat @catiewithac It just came today, but I‘m loving it! 4mo

Calling all #Kobo users! I‘m switching away from Amazon (and all the oligarchs) so I‘m ditching my Kindle Paperwhite and looking for a Kobo. Which one do you like best, and why? My preference is for lightweight and small enough to fit in a purse, but I‘m flexible. Convince me that your version is the best one. 😀

TheBookHippie I need this info as well… 4mo
TheKidUpstairs I keep it super simple, I've got the Clara BW. It's the most basic, which is what I want. E-ink, glare free, screen lights up for night reading, but without the glare and eye strain I get reading on a tablet style reader. Simple interface, connects to OverDrive/Libby so I can borrow ebooks from the library. My main complaint is that I find Kobos only last about 5 years before being to be replaced (not sure how that is vs Kindle, or if it's just me 4mo
Lcsmcat @TheKidUpstairs Can you highlight text? I know you can use the stylus on the higher model but I don‘t tend to write notes so much, but I constantly highlight quotes I want to share. 4mo
See All 10 Comments
TheKidUpstairs @Lcsmcat yes, you can highlight! 4mo
Lcsmcat @TheKidUpstairs Thanks! This is helpful information! 4mo
Deblovestoread Thanks for this as I‘m doing the same. Killing all things Amazon! 4mo
Flaneurette I really like my kobo libra color bc I love buttons and it comes in white 4mo
Lcsmcat @Flaneurette Do you use the stylus? And is it reasonably lightweight? (I tend to read my Chunksters this way to save my wrists!) 4mo
Flaneurette @Lcsmcat I don‘t love the stylus because the libra seems too small to write on and the palm rejection isn‘t great but maybe I need to use it more to get used to it. The device is very light and ergonomic- very comfortable to read on 4mo
Lcsmcat @Flaneurette Thank you! This is very helpful! 4mo
