They carried the soldier's greatest fear, which was the fear of blushing. Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not to. It was what had brought then to the war in the first place, nothing positive, no dreams of glory or honor, just to avoid the blush of dishonor. They died so as not to die of embarrassment.

The begining captivated my attention. Although a simple sentence it intrigued my mind. I loved the book even though at times it became too gruesome to keep reading or I felt their sorrow so far within me. I have to say the only thing that I didn't agree with was how it ended for him. He should have met a more gruesome end.
