My Own Words | Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Listening to RBG's My Own Words on #audiobook and it is the only way to do so - the book is a collection of her speeches and writing, from her preteen years to present. Where available, the audiobook uses actual recordings of Ginsburg, her husband, Antonin Scalia, and others. Hearing their voices brings the sometimes tedious legal essays to life.

I enjoyed this mid-19th century portrait of Ireland, strong female characters, and Catholicism. Less enjoyable was the extremely dark plot twist toward the very end, but it helped tie everything together in the only way that made sense. A solid read that kept my attention.

An exciting tale of suspense, intrigue, the multiverse, and true love ❤️

Gissy This made the difference between Jason and his doppelgängers! 8y
kbkatherine Yes @Gissy! When that part came up, I was wondering how Crouch would resolve the issue, but love always wins! 8y

This cookbook, organized by type of vegetable, certainly upholds its claim to help you cook your way through a bounty of fresh produce. Ly gives you a way to use every single part of the plants you're cooking - including tomato leaves and kale stems, which may be going a bit too far for many. Some of the recipes sounded good, but were so similar to those around the foodie internet that I didn't find it necessary to try them out or buy the book.

Absolutely beautiful writing, brilliant character development, and plenty of plot twists to keep me turning the page. 🍊

A fascinating exploration of tribal societies vs modern western societies, with an emphasis on the goodness evoked when people are truly dependent on their tribes (and the corruption that occurs when they're not).

As much as I wanted to love this beautifully photographed and written cookbook, I just can't see most recipes translating to my real-life kitchen, even for special gatherings with loved ones. Too fussy, too precious, too *too.* I will likely try a few of the recipes, but overall prefer simpler, homier cooking.

My ultimate test of a good cookbook is if it's worth purchasing, after a test run of borrowing from the library. The answer with Small Victories is ABSOLUTELY YES. Turshen gives readers/cooks hundreds of recipes, techniques, and spin-offs in a familiar, easy-going manner that invites experimentation and joy in the kitchen.

At age 34, way too much of this book still resonates with me. Also, the red on the cover is a velvety material - touch and feel books are not just for kids! Totally worth flipping through.

The whole gimmick of this book is to take a single recipe (in this case, chopped chickpea salad), identify a "small victory" (knowing when to use a shortcut, like dressing up canned beans with fresh veg instead of cooking dried beans), and then listing multiple spin-offs on said victory (white beans with shaved fennel, black-eyed peas with collards and peanuts, black beans with tomatoes and cilantro). Multiple variations in a single recipe. ?

Working my way through a library copy of Small Victories and thinking I need to buy my own... Already made the eggplant yogurt dip and it is delicious!

A modern tale of relationships in many forms (siblings, marriage, young love, old flames, flings, parenthood) and what happens when money, greed, fraud, and deception get involved.
