Commonwealth | Ann Patchett
The acclaimed, bestselling authorwinner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prizetells the enthralling story of how an unexpected romantic encounter irrevocably changes two families lives. One Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins shows up at Franny Keatings christening party uninvited. Before evening falls, he has kissed Frannys mother, Beverlythus setting in motion the dissolution of their marriages and the joining of two families. Spanning five decades, Commonwealth explores how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children involved. Spending summers together in Virginia, the Keating and Cousins children forge a lasting bond that is based on a shared disillusionment with their parents and the strange and genuine affection that grows up between them. When, in her twenties, Franny begins an affair with the legendary author Leon Posen and tells him about her family, the story of her siblings is no longer hers to control. Their childhood becomes the basis for his wildly successful book, ultimately forcing them to come to terms with their losses, their guilt, and the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another.Told with equal measures of humor and heartbreak, Commonwealth is a meditation on inspiration, interpretation, and the ownership of stories. It is a brilliant and tender tale of the far-reaching ties of love and responsibility that bind us together.

The book was beautifully written - after all, this is Ann Patchett - but I did get the characters confused at times because I simply wasn't particularly interested in any of them. Perhaps it just wasn't the right book for aeroplane reading or perhaps my expectations based on the others of her books that I've read were impossibly high.

SamAnne Love Patchett. But felt the same way about this novel! 2w

I loved Bel Canto by this author. I am hoping to enjoy this novel just as much.

Smrloomis I loved Bel Canto and this one - even though it seemed completely different to me. Be curious to hear what you think! 2mo
cajunsyd @Smrloomis I will let you know! 2mo
cajunsyd @Smrloomis I really enjoyed this one, maybe not quite as much as Bel Canto. I did find the writing style to be very similar; Patchett does an amazing job of getting into characters‘ emotions and the many layers that make up a person, in particular how events big and small shape a person for life. I love that! 4w
Smrloomis @cajunsyd yes, definitely agree about her writing style. Now I just need to read more of her backlist 🤞🏽 (edited) 4w

I have unsuccessfully tried to read this book a couple of times before then bailing on it. I guess that “the third time is a charm“ because I got through it this time. To me, it was good but not nearly as good as Bel Canto, which is the only other Patchett book I‘ve read. I‘m not giving up on the author however. I picked The Dutch House as my choice for book club next month.

Cinfhen I‘m sorry you didn‘t love it in the end. It‘s very different from Bel Canto, but I preferred this one. My favorite one of hers is 3mo
suvata @Cinfhen That‘s on my TBR also. She writes really well but I just couldn‘t get into the characters this time. 3mo
Jess861 I have found it hard to get into Ann Patchett books. I wasn't really a fan of Bel Canto and I found State of Wonder to just be ok. Those are the only two that I've read and I haven't decided if I'll try a third book of hers down the line. 3mo

Cinfhen I think you‘ll like State of Wonder. It‘s less about multi characters and much more single character driven plus the setting is exotic and lush, which Patchett writes so beautifully (edited) 3mo
suvata @Jess861 I am not giving up yet because she writes so beautifully. I‘m anxious to try 3mo
suvata @Cinfhen I‘m going to try The Dutch House next because that‘s the book I picked for #LMPBC. 3mo
Cinfhen I read The Dutch House last week. I thought the writing was perfect but I wasn‘t 100% in line with some of the plot devices. I think this might be more similar in style to Commonwealth but it‘s an absolute pick and was a pleasure to read. I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts. 3mo
Hooked_on_books I second @Cinfhen on State of Wonder. I thought it was marvelous. 3mo
Cinfhen Thanks for backing me up @Hooked_on_books 😘 3mo

Somehow very simple and yet fascinating. If you read the description of the book, it just talks about people becoming unexpectedly romantically entwined and then what happens after— thus, it took me a long time to convince myself to read it. Glad i did. I had a love/hate relationship with every character (except Burt- f*** Burt) and wanted to know how everyone‘s story ended up. One problem was the jumping timelines- that did get a bit confusing.

Marriage, divorce, death and sometimes love weaves through this family story that spans generations. Unlike other reviewers, I didn‘t see malice or hate, but unfortunate circumstances and flawed, honest and believable characters. If you‘re like me, you‘ll finish with a feeling of melancholy - and gratitude that you just peeked in, but did not live through, the tale.

When I picked up this book and was actually reading it I enjoyed it. I thought the writing was wonderful, but I was never dying to pick it up once I put it down for the day. I read this after Sally Field's memoir which was rather depressing so that that may have affected my feelings about it because this was definitely not a happy story either. Maybe that was too much sadness back to back? I don't know but it gets a "pick" just in case ??‍♀️

The characters were interesting, but I struggled to find any driving theme. Unless it was family hurts each other, but they are also there for each other when times are thin. Except for one. Or it could be that even tragedy sets us off in directions we enjoy that wouldn‘t have happened were it not for the tragedy. I guess both. But some of the vignettes seemed to be superfluous like Loemer‘s story. And the timeline was unnecessarily confusing.
