It's a very historical period story who's many diverse characters stay with you long after you finish the book. There are some very disturbing subject matters that get masterfully told, and it can be triggering for some people. I had to take breaks from it, but I had to come back to see how it ends and then I couldn't put it down! Well worth it to finish. ❤️

I WAS SHOCKED TO LEARN this is one of the books in the Banned Books conversation. Read and learn about Dr. Carter G. Woodson, Father of Black History Month! Reading is knowledge, Knowledge is Power! I believe NO books should be in the banned books conversation!

Truth about those imperfect 1st drafts, the practice of writing and not thinking of perfectionism or the end results - getting published! It reminds me of when I was young and went to NYC to do theater. I'd come home to visit my nieces, and they would say "I could be an famous actor" and "I'd say yeah you could, but 1st start with reading". They gave up right there. I will never understand people who don't love reading.

I love this book told in magic realism style. "I imagine Abulea Celias surprise as I sneak up behind her . She'll be sitting in her wicker swing overlooking the sea and she'll smell of salt and violet water. There'll be gulls and crabs along the shore . She'll stroke my cheek with her cool hands and sing quietly in my ear." I think of my daughters when I read it, who are Cuban on their grandfather's side. #dreamingincuban #latinheritagemonth
