would sell my soul to the devil himself to be able to write 1/8th as good as baldwin. phenomenal

so tender & approaches complex/expansive themes of dogmatic religion and burgeoning sexuality with such acuity. winterson‘s prose is so smooth & full. only gripe with the novel would be the holes in the story behind her eventual self actualisation (for lack of a better term)
a fave read of 2021 💘 moss gorgeously observes the way we subtly edit ourselves in both the presence & absence of others and the internal conflict we have we ourselves. i loved how easily it was to slip from household to household and never have it feel like awkward intrusion— it flows beautifully & lyrically
this is a best seller and the moment and i am cheering it on with pom poms and cartwheels (lol). i am floored by mason‘s clarity of expression in the articulation of the experience of mental illness, & without pertaining to an archetype. mental illness is hardly ever ephemeral nor consistent, which mason captures skilfully and compassionately without dressing it up in lyrical literary stylings.
reread of the haunting of hill house! a perfectly crafted horror. the reader is drip fed little happenings, frightful sights and curious sounds yet jackson refuses to answer questions. we are thrown out into terrifying ambiguity and have to draw up the image for ourselves and try to catch our imagination from scurrying into those dark and twisted places.
side note: i want my own cup of stars lol
absolutely stunning. on beauty is so insightful on issues such as classism, racism, sexism & fatphobia. she intertwines this discussion with plot so cleverly by placing these issues within reality rather than it feeling as if the scene is forced to allow discussion to take place. zadie is phenomenal. PHENOMENAL
this book is so RAW and i needed to take breaks from it & come up for air but honestly, feminine abjection & destructive sexual voracity are topics that keep on giving bc there truly is no bottom to the pain. ouch
