This MF book is one that never gets old! This book written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond is a New York Times Best Seller and seems to get better each time you read it. The book shows us what happens when a young boy gives a mouse a cookie.... and more. Kids in elementary school love this book and you could totally turn this into a RT. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox UDL Principle- Offer ways of customizing the display of information (1.1) - there are so many different ways to present this book to the students.
ESOL Strategy 14- Simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant https://www.scholastic.com/parents/books-and-reading/raise-a-reader-blog/if-you-...

The Rainbow Fish | Marcus Pfister

Pickpick

This F story by Marcus Pfister has won multiple awards and I see why! This book is such a classic and really shows students how to be good friends, which is a important thing to learn early on. He becomes very lonely in this book because he can not be a good friend and share. I think you could use this book in your classroom for S in grades K-1. I chose UDL 9.3- Develop self-assessment and reflection because the students will learn a lesson.

marissamaddox ESOL Strategy 15 - Reinforce the key ideas you present again and again

https://www.learningtogive.org/resources/rainbow-fish-literature-guide
The site gives you before, during, and after questions to ask the students which ask about emotion and feelings. The site also gives you an art lesson to wrap everything up.

This MF picture book written by Doreen Cronin and Illustrated by Betsy Lewin would so fun in classroom for a RT. This book also received the 2001 Caldecott Medal. The book is about cows that CLICK CLACK MOO all day long. They are really writing Farmer Brown notes about the better working conditions they would like. Kids would love the illustrations of this book and find it hilarious.
#ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox The UDL I would select is offer ways of customizing the display of information (1.1) because there are many great youtube videos of this story being told different ways. The ESOL I picked is 17. Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions. https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/58153
This CPALMS link is great for 1st grade, where they create a flip book

Greystone Secrets #1: The Strangers | Margaret Peterson Haddix
post image
Mehso-so

This SF novel written by Margaret Peterson Haddix would be good for a LC. I think the students would be engaged because of the mystery of the book. The book is about siblings who are missing their mother and discover another dimension in hopes to find her. The UDL principle I would select would be highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships (3.2) due to the close relationship between the siblings. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox I would select ESOL Strategy 9- Teach note-taking strategies: T-lists, time lines etc.- I think it would be beneficial for the student to take notes throughout the book to be able to review once they are finished.

Through this link you can access a discussion guide that you could use in the classroom to better understand the novel with your students.

This poetry book written by Paul Fleischman and illustrated by Eric Beddows is designed for two voices so it would be perfect for PR in the classroom. This poetry book has also won a John Newbery Medal for its excellence and you can clearly see why. The UDL principle I selected was 5.3- Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance- Which I think reading with different partners would be good practice.

marissamaddox I would use ESOL Strategy 2- Promote cooperation (small groups)

The Mitten | Jan Brett
post image
Mehso-so

This TL picture book by Jan Brett would be good for a RA. The book is about Nicki who drops his mitten while in snow. Animals slowly start to get into the mitten with each animal getting bigger than the one before. I think kids would love the illustrations of this book and it would keep them engaged during a RA.

marissamaddox If you were to select the option of RA you could incorporate UDL principle 7.3 minimize distractions and I would pair that with ESOL strategy 6 to continually monitor students‘ comprehension.https://www.janbrett.com/piggybacks/piggybacks_the_mitten_teachers_guide.htm
When you scroll to the bottom there are 4 activities that would perfect for grades K-3. I think the best one would be where you print off the 8 animals and recreate the book.

Mazzole18 I agree, I have actually done this activity and the kids loved it. Growing up it was a classic that my mom would read to us over and over again. ESOL strategy 6 checking comprehension fits well especially using the mitten and visuals of the animals as you read the story. 4y

Pickpick

This RF book written by Mo Williams won the Caldecott Medal in 2005 and it was well deserved. In this book a little girl goes to the laundry mat with her father when she realizes her most prized possession has gone missing. I think you could turn this book into some fun and make it a S book that you use in the classroom. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox UDL 3.2- Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas,
and relationships- There are good text to self connections that I think will make kids relate to this book.
ESOL 10- Teach think, pair and share strategies in cooperative groups- you could have students think of times they've lost something meaningful to them and share with partner or class.

This is a really engaging RA, love her tone and pace

This RF book written by Matt de la Pena and illustrated by Christian Robinson will blow you away. It won a Caldecott and Newbery medal in 2016 and after reading I know why now. This book shows you the relationship between a grandma and grandson and how the grandson is always asking questions about other people like his friends having stuff that him and grandma do not. I think this would be a great RA for the classroom. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox UDL Principle 3.2-Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships - I think throughout the book you could ask questions and explain the big ideas and highlight the relationship between grandma and son.
ESOL Strategy 15- Reinforce the key ideas you present again and again.

Where the Wild Things Are | Maurice Sendak

Oh Wow! This Caldecott Medal winning F book written by Maurice Sendak is a must read. The story takes your through the imagination of a boy named Max. His mother calls him a wild thing and sends him to bed without dinner and that's when his imagination runs wild. I would love to see this used in the classroom as a RT because of its amazing visuals. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox This book is a movie that you could show in your classroom so I selected- Use multiple media for communication (5.1) as my UDL principle.
ESOL Strategy 17-Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models,
demonstrations, realia, body language and facial

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind | William Kamkwamba, Bryan Mealer
post image
Pickpick

This B written by William Kamkwamda and Bryan Mealer will put you through a rollercoaster of emotions from tears to smiles to laughter. This little boy has to overcome so many different challenges and despite having to do so he learns to build a windmill in his small town, the news of this goes all around the world. I would use this B as part of an AS. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox UDL 3.3- Guide information processing and visualization- I think this is important to properly comprehend the book.
ESOL 6- Continually monitor students‘ comprehension- I think this ties nicely with the UDL I selected, to ensure the student is understanding the B as you read.https://study.com/academy/lesson/the-boy-who-harnessed-the-wind-lesson-plan.html
This website includes a very detailed lesson plan with a group activity and a lesson quiz

Mazzole18 As a future science teacher I have this one on my to read list. I know it has gotten excellent reviews. However, I have been cautioned that there are two different versions depending on what grade level you teach. My mentor teacher used it in 7th grade and the kids weren't fans. I think its all about presentation and being excited about what you are reading. I look forward to trying your suggestions and checking out the group activities.

Wishtree | Katherine Applegate

This MF novel by Katherine Applegate is filled with so many connections to the real world and shows so many great lessons as you read. This book is about a community that writes wishes on pieces of fabric and ties them to branches of the tree. This book could be used as a SR as you walk through this book with your students and experience it together. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox UDL 7.2-Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity- I think there on topics in this book that as you read you can explain importance and connect to the real world.
ESOL Strategy 6- Continually monitor students‘ comprehension- This is important for this book, just to stop and ask questions and clarify to make sure there is comprehension.

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate

This incredible RF book is written by Katherine Applegate and won the Newbery Medal in 2013. The book is about a gorilla named Ivan who has to live in a cage at a shopping mall for 27 years! It real pulls on your heart but you can't stop reading. I think you could use this book for an LC and you would be able to discuss it for hours. This book is also becoming a movie in just a couple months, highly recommend. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox I would select UDL 3.2 -Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships
ESOL Strategy 4- Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge (about elephants and relationships)

This website provides a reading guide and teaching guide for free to use in your classroom.

Mazzole18 Another great book that I have on my summer reading list. I have heard its a tear jerker and loving animals the way I do I can't believe I haven't read it yet. I know The One and Only Bob the sequel came out in June and Disney has a moving coming out in August which I am sure will make this a higher demand book in the classroom. UDL 3.2 seems to fit perfect with big ideas and relationships. 4y

Pig the Winner | Aaron Blabey

This MF book is too funny and really makes the kids laugh. This book was written by the talented Aaron Blabey and would be perfect for a RA. This book shows us how Pig the Pug ALWAYS has to win no matter what. Pig cheats and lies to make his way to the finish line first. #ucflae3414su20

marissamaddox UDL - 2.1 Clarify vocabulary and symbols - in this book you may need to go over vocabulary in the text for the students to fully comprehend
ESOL- 5- Teach technical vocabulary supporting key conceptshttps://www.counselorkeri.com/2019/09/17/pig-the-winner-activities/
This resource is used to teach students about companionship that ties in with the book being that Pig is the opposite and has no companionship. It includes a lesson plan and worksheets

Oh so creepy! This MF book is great for a spooky and creepy RL for many ages and grade levels. Written by Aaron Reynolds and Illustrated by Peter Brown. This book is a NYTBS and won a Caldecott Medal. The book follows Peter Rabbit around while he eats and gets taunted by carrots. Throughout the book you'll be looking over your shoulder to make sure no carrots are coming for you. Peter Rabbit learned his lesson throughout this story #ucflae3414su20
