This book was published in 1989, and it is a traditional literature children's book. This book tells the story of a young boy named Nicki who loses a white mitten in the snow. As various woodland animals seek refuge inside the mitten, the mitten accommodates them all somehow along the way. It was recognized by the IRA-CBC Children's Choices for its award-winning folktale retelling.

I‘ve adored this book ever since our teacher read it to us in school. We had cutouts of a mitten and all the animals to play with. It‘s originally an old Ukrainian folk tale. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. I bought a copy for The Wyrmling for Christmas this year. ❤️

This TL picture book by Jan Brett would be good for a RA. The book is about Nicki who drops his mitten while in snow. Animals slowly start to get into the mitten with each animal getting bigger than the one before. I think kids would love the illustrations of this book and it would keep them engaged during a RA.

marissamaddox If you were to select the option of RA you could incorporate UDL principle 7.3 minimize distractions and I would pair that with ESOL strategy 6 to continually monitor students‘ comprehension.https://www.janbrett.com/piggybacks/piggybacks_the_mitten_teachers_guide.htm
When you scroll to the bottom there are 4 activities that would perfect for grades K-3. I think the best one would be where you print off the 8 animals and recreate the book.

Having carefully researched this Ukrainian tale, she renders each picture with true authenticity. This TL picture book will evoke warm and cozy feelings in readers any time of the year. I‘d rate the story 3 stars (ok), but the illustrations (as usual in her books) are gorgeous. There is a main picture on each page, with beautiful borders on either side. She does a very nice job of making it look Ukrainian (the first page describes some of the research she did for the book), and the borders add a bit of a preview as to what might be coming on the next page. So, 3 stars for the story and 4 stars for the illustrations.
