I love Katherine Applegate and Wishtree might be my absolute favorite book by her. 💚💚💚

She explores themes of acceptance, racism, love, and friendship and uses a talking tree to bring everything, and everyone together.

This book made me want to just sit outside and listen to all the nature around me.

A short and sweet book narrated by an Oak tree who has nurtured relationships in its neighborhood for over 200 years. Its stories center around kindness, love, and acceptance. Throughout the book are gorgeous drawings featuring critters who live in the tree‘s hollows, and many Oak leaves falling.

Incredibly crafted & beautiful novel of growth, change, and hopefulness. I laughed, cried, and even had goosebumps while reading “Wishtree.” Perfect fall read. 🍂 Included a photo of my favorite tree in my backyard - I wonder what stories it could tell? 5/5 ⭐️

This multi-award-winning (ALSC/ALA Notable Children‘s Book, E.B. White Read-Aloud Award, NY Times Best Seller, Et Al.) book speaks to the impact that two little words can have – Leave and Stay. Who would have guessed that Red, the wisest of the wish trees, and his troop of animal friends, would be the ones that would bring about change? Told from the perspective of Red, this turns into a tear-jerker. Have a tissue handy!

TabathaA Best assigned as an LC, PR, or AS. Use UDL 7.2 (optimize relevance, value, and authenticity) and 8.3 (foster collaboration and community) to highlight the world-to-text examples. EL 5 (teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts) and 16 (integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities) should be implemented for those who are ELS and those who have difficulties in comprehending that the story is being told by a tree. 4y

Geared toward the 8-12 year old crowd, this is a charming story about inclusion, acceptance and speaking up for your neighbors. Red is a 216-year-old red oak who narrates. She is the “Wishtree” and when a little girl, who happens to be Muslim, wishes for a friend (and whose family is the target of hate), Red decides she will not longer just be an observer but will speak and act. https://cannonballread.com/2021/03/wishtree-elcicco/

Wish Tree is a great novel for a literature circle. This short novel teaches us the importance of diversity, inclusion, kindness & love. We learn all about “Red”, an old wish-tree with decades of wisdom. This story is beautiful but warning- your eyes may water (Haha) ! This RF novel would best be taught using UDL principles 2.1 (clarify vocabulary and symbols) & 3.2 (highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas & relationships)

This book is about a community that writes wishes on pieces of fabric and ties them to branches of the tree. This book could be used as a SR as you walk through this book with your students and experience it together. #ucflae3414su20

Wishtree is a beautiful MF novel by Katherine Applegate. It is about Red, an old oak tree who cares deeply for the animals and humans who live in his neighborhood. He and his animal friends join together to make one little girl feel welcome by granting her wish to find a friend. Wishtree is a story about community, friendship, thriving in a diverse community, and (of course) a bit of magic!

#ucflae3414su20

nquintus Wishtree would be excellent as an LC. This would give students of every reading and fluency level the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the book‘s language and concepts. An LC would also be a great way for children to engage with each other about the harm caused by discrimination and the benefits of diversity in the community. These discussions will foster collaboration and community (UDL 8.3) as well as cooperation (ESOL 2). 4y

I know it is a good book if it makes me cry and this book did. Wishtree is about an old oak tree named Red. People far and near use the tree as if it is a wishing well. They write down a wish and tie it to the tree. For many years the tree has received wishes, but a recent wish shocked everyone including Red. In addition to that, Red's existence is threatened.

A sweet story about loving your neighbor and taking action in the face of injustice. Red is our narrator, a 216-year-old raggy tree; the community ties wishes to Red's branches once a year. Interesting nature facts/vocabulary are casually woven into this beautiful narrative. I would have liked this to be a tad longer so the friendship between Stephen and Samar could be fleshed out more, but I otherwise really enjoyed this gentle tale.

Summerm This story would best be RA, LC, or as an AS. This author is an amazing example to young readers. The UDL strategy 3.2 (Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships) can be useful to get the class to comprehend the information & EL strategy 2 (promote cooperation). Promoting cooperation can make sure the class is behaving and paying attention #ucflea3414su19 (edited) 5y

Wishtree is a F written by Katherine Applegate. This is a heartwarming story about a tree who is a town staple, where children and adults come to write wishes and hang them on the branches. When a new family moves in and isn‘t accepted by the community, the Wishtree‘s purpose becomes more important than ever. Students will learn the importance of kindness in this heart warming story. This is a great choice for IR or RA. #ucflae3414su19

This link will take you to a website with different teaching activity ideas for you to use in your classroom using the book Wishtree. In your own classroom you can use ESOL Strategy 38 to make reading easier. This book contains short chapters so it would fit this strategy perfectly. This also can satisfy UDL 8.3. Students can come together and discuss readings.

DrSpalding Beautiful image for a beautiful book. English learner strategy 38 is perfect for this title. 8.3 fostering community and collaboration also works well with literature circles. I think reading aloud is a valid option as well. This book will bring about necessary conversations! 5y

Excellent story about tolerance as told from the perspective of Red, an oak tree with 216 rings. This may be a front runner for the first first-chapter Friday of the 2019-2020 school year.

crazyspine Have you read One and Only Ivan? 5y
Econaghan @crazyspine I read about 1/3, but put it down. Can‘t remember why I stopped, though. Did you enjoy it? (edited) 5y
