Sparky! | Jenny Offill

Pickpick

Who else wants a pet Sloth after reading this book? I know I do. “Sparky!” By Jenny Offill, illustrated by Chris Appelhans is the perfect MF book that all your animal-lovers will enjoy! This book is also a Charlotte Zolotow Award winner! It‘s about a girl who wants a pet, but mom tells her no. Unless… mom says the pet shouldn‘t need to be walked, bathed, or washed. After some research, she finds the perfect pet Sloth named Sparky! #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef I would use this book as a RA! UDL Principle 3.2 Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships, such as the relationship between the girl and her pet and the events that took place. ESOL Strategy 16 Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. During my RA I would ask questions to deepen understanding so that students will be able to complete the story map. 4y
Viviannef This resource provides a multi-leveled story map activity and sample pages that students may write or draw in. This activity supports comprehension and includes two customizable spaces to respond to questions, reflections, or learning targets. https://www.teachingbooks.net/clp.cgi?master_id=39188&lf_id=9 4y
CameoD Vivianne your posts are always so detailed I love them! I agree this would make a marvelous read aloud book and I love the front cover. Your UDL principle aligns very well with the book and strategies you‘re using! 4y

A poem for two voices? You heard that right. “Joyful Noise” By Paul Fleischman is an incredible Newbery award winning P book that should be in everyone‘s classroom library! What makes this book so unique is that it has 14 poems that sit side by side but students read them at the same time, making these poems so fun to hear! The poems are about different insects and their descriptions. Could even be included in a science lesson! #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef I would love to use this book CR or even PR! CR will help students with their fluency (reading/speaking), self-confidence, and motivation. UDL Principle 8.3 Foster collaboration and community. ESOL strategies 16 Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities and 32 Use student pairs for team learning, especially for reports, experiments, and projects. 4y
Viviannef This resource allows students to work together to use CR in the classroom as well as dive deeper in this multipurpose poetry lesson. Has great resources for teachers to organize instruction and includes extension activities. http://www.readwritethink.org/resources/resource-print.html?id=69 4y
Emmaturtle3 Wow Vivianne this poetry book sounds amazing, 14 poems!!! I definitely think that a CR would help students build fluency and I think that the UDL Principal regarding collaboration and community would work perfectly. I really enjoyed your post!! 4y
RamzieM This seems like an amazing poem book!! I love the resource that you provided it will definitely come in handy in the classroom. 4y

Water Princess | Susan Verde, Georgie Badiel
post image
Pickpick

“The Water Princess” by Susan Verde, Illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. This impactful NF B story was inspired by African-born model named Georgie Badiel. In Gie Gie‘s small African village she doesn‘t have running water, so she walks with her mother to a far well. The water isn‘t clear, carrying a pot on her head isn‘t easy, and the walk is a far distance. Gie Gie hopes that one day she will be able to have access to clean water. #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef I would use this story as a RA in the classroom and discuss the struggles that other children have around the world. UDL principle 2.4 Promote understanding across languages. ESOL strategy 22 gives enough wait time for second language learners to respond to ques. Throughout discussions and questions from the RA, EL students will be given extra time to answer and students may put themselves in Gie Gie‘s spot to understand what she‘s going through. 4y
Viviannef This Resource is from Susan Verde‘s website, she created a small activity for students. The activity allows students to put themselves in Gie Gie‘s position as she walks with a pot on her head. Students express how it makes them feel and what they will use the water for. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/585a7978be659475691d30d0/t/5953edfdff7c50...

Who else thought they would grow a watermelon in their stomach if they accidentally swallowed a seed? I know I did! The watermelon seed by Greg Pizzoli is a fun MF story about a crocodile who loved to eat watermelon… suddenly he swallowed a seed... he begins to imagine the worst! Will his stomach grow? Will vines grow out of his ears? Will he eat watermelon again? Check out this Geisel Award-winning book to find out! #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef I would use this story as an RT for young readers to promote fluency and it‘s a funny story that the children will love! UDL principle 5.3 Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance and ESOL strategy 16 Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. Using the story as an RT will help with reading with expression. 4y
Viviannef This resource provides great ideas for teachers to use in their classrooms using this book! The teacher may use the story in a reader‘s theatre and emphasizing the exclamation points to read with expression. The resource also provides fun activities such as storytelling, discussion questions, and the idea of a melon tasting party! http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2014/02/2013-geisel-award-winner-the-waterm... 4y

This book brings back memories to elementary school. The Mitten by Jan Brett is a TL book and would be great to use in the classroom as an SR or S! I love the idea of using this book as an S in the wintertime, the kids would have a blast! The picture book tells the story of Nikki accidentally dropping his white mitten into the snow. One by one the animals begin to climb into it… can you guess what animals? Read to see for yourself! #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef UDL principle 7.3 Minimize threats and distractions; to keep students focused on the story using props. ESOL strategy 42 Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information; based on the props they will be able to sequence the animals that crawled into the mitten. 4y
Viviannef This resource provides a printable of the mitten and animals to perform an S or students may use these independently to recall the sequence of the story. https://www.janbrett.com/put_the_animals_in_the_mitten.htm 4y

Let the Children March | Monica Clark-Robinson
post image
Pickpick

Every child has a voice to change the world. This stood out to me in the Coretta Scott King Award-winning book, “Let the Children March” by Monica Clark-Robinson, illustrated by Frank Morrison. This is an great HF book for a RA and in a social studies lesson regarding the civil rights movement. This book takes place in Birmingham (1960s) after MLK‘s speech, where brave children marched fighting for their civil rights. #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef For a better future, the children had to endure the fear and hate they faced as they marched. This book should be shared in every classroom. Especially with the reality, we are living in, students may relate the marches from the book to the “Black Lives Matter” marches they have seen on the news. UDL Principle 3.1 Activate or supply background knowledge. ESOL strategy 42 Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and info 4y
Viviannef This resource provides a lesson plan for upper-grade levels, background information on the march of 1963, and an email to contact the kids who attended the march in Birmingham. Sometimes hugs say more than words… “The Rabbit Listened” by Cori Doerrfeld is such a great MF book that teaches students about empathy in a moving story. However, someone appears, and it‘s all that Taylor needs… can you guess who it might be? #ucflae3414su20

DrSpalding Oops… While it seems somewhat fictitious or fanciful, this is not modern fantasy. This is realistic fiction. This book is a true mirror and window for children. Use this as a literature circle option in the future and the many resources that come along with it. 4y

Ameyer32 This sounds like a fun story! Carrots are a realistic fear of some children! :) I think your UDL strategy is a great relation to the text. Activating prior knowledge for some of those kids who either enjoy or even those that dislike carrots. Your ESOL strategy is a great one as well. Having models and things to relate to the story are a great addition. 4y
DrSpalding Wonderful post, as we reviewed in class. I like that your resource highlights the four awards this book has one. You made an excellent selection for your read aloud. Children enjoy this book. Your universal design and English learner strategies are appropriate. Wonderful first post. 4y
