This MF book highlights the theme that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. This would be a great book for a RA or LC.

Key strategies to use are:
UDL Principle 3.2: highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas and relationships
UDL Principle 3.3: Guide information processing and visualization.
ESOL Strategy 20: list the lost important words or phrases you plan to use and write them on a whiteboard.

gpraytor A companion lesson to use can be found here! https://www.weareteachers.com/dinosaur-books-for-kids/ 4y
JoslynB This book looks absolutely adorable. I love the message it wants to deliver to young readers. It is important to teach students that setting goals and expectations are important for making what they find impossible possible. Big ideas and relationships for UDL principles can offer opportunities to ask them questions for making connections. 4y
DrSpalding Again, you need a bit more detail in your summary. We are teachers is an excellent resource! Keep using it. 4y

This MF book highlights the importance of friendship and community. I would enjoy reading this book as a RA and interacting with students about their viewpoints on friendship and community.

UDK Principle 3.1: activate or supply background knowledge
UDL Principle 1.1: offer ways of customizing the display of information
ESOL Strategy 11: place language in meaningful context

This Biography is a great book for teachers to integrate in the science curriculum at the beginning of the year as a AS.

Strategies that pair well are:
UDL Principle 4.1: vary the methods for repsonse and navigation
UDL Principle 5.3: build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice performance
ESOL Strategy 23: structure organizers consisting for new terminology that learners will encounter in the new lesson.

gpraytor Attached is a valuable unit to accompany this book. https://teachbesideme.com/temple-grandin-unit-study/ 4y
JoslynB I am always looking for books that incorporate science into the classroom. I enjoy the choice because it is always a wise idea to figure out how to combine literature alongside science to introduce to students at an early time period. 4y
DrSpalding I am not sure what other books this author has written but it could be an opportunity for an author study. I think read aloud or using this book as a reference when teaching science concepts might be a better choice. 4y

This P novel is a 3 award winner in 2014/2015 winning the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, John Newbery Award, and the 2015 winner of the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literature. This would be a great PR and LC.

UDL Principle 3.3 : Guide information processing and visualization
UDL Principle 2.1: Clarify vocabulary and symbols
ESOL 10: teach strategies in cooperative groups

#ucflae3414su20

gpraytor This unit has teaching ideas to incorporate in this books readings: http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2014/12/brown-girl-dreaming/ 4y
DrSpalding This is actually a memoir and would be considered a biography. Again a helpful resource but you are not tying together the resource, the teaching strategy and then explaining how the universal design and English learner strategies align to your classroom application. I won‘t continue to make the same comment but it may apply to other posts. 4y

JoslynB I read this book and genuinely enjoyed how it did play out. I think all your principles and strategies are excellent for tackling this book particularly principle 7.2. It can offer a variety of personal reflections and responses about kindness. I also think you can use this to highlight how students should treat others. 4y
DrSpalding Realistic fiction and read aloud work nicely. It is easy to facilitate text to self connections! This is a wonderful book to discuss the theme of being grateful. 4y

UDL Principle 7.2: Optimize relevance, value and authenticity.
#ucflae3414su20
ESOL 10: Teach think, pair, share strategies in cooperative groups.

This would be a good book to integrate think, pair, share in the classroom.

ashleyshugars Grace, such a cute book! Do you think this could be used as a RT as well with all of the different animals? I definitely think that could work! Your strategies work nicely, I would also add 5.1 for UDL if RT was used! 4y

This dystopian set SF book is a John Newbery Medal winner. This book would be effective in a IR strategy but also implementing LC throughout the book to support students comprehension.

gpraytor UDL Principle 3.2: highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. ESOL Strategy 15: reinforce the key ideas you present again & again. Using these both to guide and comprehension is important because students may get lost in some of the themes depending on their reading level. 4y

This RF book pacts a powerful punch. I would use this book for IR and also LC. Because if its powerful message I would love to see students first reaction what what they learned from the book through IR and come together to do LC at different times during the reading. The author is a two-time Coretta Scott King Award Winner, and this book will warm the hearts of students and adults.
#ucflae3414su20

gpraytor Using UDL Principle 3.3: guide information processing and visualization, this is key because this book may become overwhelming to some student's during the darker parts of the book. ESOL Strategy 27: highlight written materials for readability by enlarging the size print, by organizing chapters meaningfully etc. 4y
gpraytor This link is a resource for lessons, activities and more to use with the book and strategies https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/books/out-of-my-mind-by-sharon-m-draper/ 4y

This RF book is a great companion during Hispanic Heritage Month. I would personally use the S strategy for this book and encourage a conversation, and discussions about the themes of this book because it touches upon so many cultures.
#ucflae3414su20

gpraytor Using UDL Principle 3.2: highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. This is an ideal principle because of the nature of the book and overall theme. #ucflae3414su20

This B book follows an Italian family from their roots in Italy to America. This is an amazing book that highlights family lineage when immigrating. For 2nd grade students, I believe a SR strategy would work well while using UDL Principle 2.1: clarifying vocabulary and symbols.

This RF book highlights how fear influences choices, relationships, and more especially when it comes to immigration. This is a beautiful book that tells the story of a young girl who moves to a new country, new school, and takes her fear with her. Using UDL Principle 9.2: facilitating personal coping skills and strategies, the teacher can simultaneously tell this story and teach valuable skills when it comes to handling fear.
#ucflae3414su20

gpraytor By also using ESOL Strategy 11: placing language in meaningful context, this provides an area where ELLs will feel safe enough to connect possible personal experiences to the text. A great way to read this book is aloud (RA) by the teacher so they can guide students with a Q&A about the two main characters and their relationship. 4y

gpraytor Also, ESOL Strategy 24: incorporating the culture and the language of second language learners in the curriculum will work effectively while reading this book and conducting the lesson below because of the emphasis of diversity and multiple cultures. 4y

gpraytor A great strategy is UDL 3.2: highlighting patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. Students can use writing prompts to tie these principles together while reading the book.
