The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate
232 posts | 296 read | 6 reading | 79 to read
Winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller, this stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself. Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes. The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events. Supports the Common Core State Standards

I can definitely say that the One and Only Ivan was my favorite Katherine Applegate RF novel! I really enjoyed this book, even with its very sad moments the turn arounds and uplifting moments kept you going! The UDL I would use for this novel is 3.2 to have the students get the big picture and for ESOL Strategy I would align with 4 to see their knowledge of elephants and the wild. #UCFLAE3414F19

The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine Applegate and illustrated by Patricia Castelao is a New York Times Bestseller and a Newbery Gold Medal. This is a RF genre and would be a great LC or IR. This book was about a silverback gorilla named Ivan who was held in captivity for most of his life. This gorilla lived alongside an elephant named Stella and eventually a baby elephant as well.

AlyssaB Stella ended up passing on but made Ivan promise her that they would somehow be free of their cages. Read to find out if the promise is kept... An UDL strategy would be 2.1 to clarify vocabulary and symbols. An ESOL strategy would be 36 to ask numerous questions which require level thinking responses. #UCFLAE3414F19 1mo

#ucflae3414f19 “The one and only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate was a book about a Silverback gorilla named Ivan, his two Elephant friends and a mutt. Ivan is not just a gorilla he‘s an artist, a story teller and a pillow for his friend Bob. This book causes the reader to really consider how animals who live in captivity feel. For this book I‘d have my class IR and then discuss later. This book is a John Newbery award winner.

Alexush The UDL I‘d use is 2.1 because there is some good vocabulary in this book they could learn. The ESOL strategy I chose was 36 emphasizing higher level of thinking. The website I chose ( https://stemread.com/book/the-one-and-only-ivan-by-katherine-applegate/ ) has so much good information, a lot of videos and cool lesson plans. 1mo

RF Newbery Award winner One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is a great IR for grades 3-6. This story is about a silverback gorilla who has spent almost all of his live in a “domain“ at the Exit 8 mall with his friends Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. The book has many great twists and if you are a senseative person will definitely make you cry. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM The ESOL and UDL that I would use with this book is 29 - offer a variety of reference material at the students' instructional level for independent use, and 9.1 - promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation. This F, written by Katherine Applegate and illustrated by Patricia Castelao, features a silverback gorilla apart of a circus show inside a mall. When Ruby, a baby elephant arrives, Ivan makes a promise to Stella (an older elephant) to get them out of there and somewhere safe. Is this a promise Ivan can keep or is it too big for his hands. This book is great for an IR and is a Newbery Medalist.
#UCFLAE3414F19

JRone A UDL strategy that aligns with this book would be 7.2 Optimize relevance, value and authenticity because you can connect the characters in the book to real animals and talk about their appropriate living conditions. An ESOL strategy would be #15 Reinforce the key ideas you present again and again because a lot of the ideas in the book show up multiple times throughout the story. 2mo
JRone The lesson plan https://bookunitsteacher.com/wp/?p=3800 allows for students to keep track of the different settings throughout the book. This book will have your emotions all over the place. Spoken through the eyes of a very expressive, thoughtful, and loving Silverback Gorilla by the name of Ivan. I would categorize this book in the genre of RF because even though it is a story told by a talking animal, the situation he speaks of can and has happened. The UDL principles 9.3 & 3.1 regarding developing self-assessment/reflection & activate/supply background knowledge#UCFLAE341F19

Tinks **Added info.** This heart-felt novel is about perseverance, love, loss, promises, and new beginnings. A must read, young and old & should be in every classroom. The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (chapter book, published 2012) was amazing. It follows the one and only Ivan, a great silverback, as he lives in his “domain” which he is content with alongside his friend Stella the Elephant and Bob the dog. They perform in a circus, led by Mack who raised Ivan. But when Stellas foot gets infected & Ruby joins, he is determined to get a better life for them

Wow. This is a need-read. Published in 2012, the book touches on what life is like for animals apart of the circus and being taken away from their habitat for entertainment. The author does an amazing job taking what was a real life gorilla that lived in Washington state, and making the story with her own characters. It shows the progression over time as Mack went from caring about animals, to caring about money. A light hearted yet heavy read!

A quick story, but good. I didn‘t realize until the end that it was based on a real gorilla who was captured in the Congo, raised by a family in their home, and then kept in captivating for years with no other gorillas. The story is told from his point of view. He is an artist and lives with an elephant and little stray dog.

The Newbery Medal, MF story, The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine Applegate is one you should add to your bookshelf if you haven‘t already! This story is about a gorilla, named Ivan, who lives and preforms at the mall with an older elephant named Stella. One day Ruby, is brought to the mall and Stella makes Ivan promise that he‘ll find a better life for them. Where do they end up? I think this would best be used as an IR for students and..

#UCFLAE3414SU19 This is a MF book that won the Newberry Medal and is a New York Times Bestseller. This is a touching story of friendship, art, promises kept, and change. Ivans promise to protect young Ruby leads to some out of the box thinking on his part. It is both amazing and heartbreaking that some of this story was inspired by a true story. It would make for an excellent LC or IR.

DawnS It was a bit sad but sometimes sad things happen... plus it turns around. https://bookunitsteacher.com/wp/?p=3800 has some options for resources to use with this book like a notebook activity to sort out the different settings. It will meet ESOL strategy 7 of show students how to use graphic organizers and I think this book aligns particularly well with UDL 9.2 facilitating personal coping skills and strategies. 4mo

WoodsKatie Ivan won a Newbery Award and it is well deserving. Students who are in grades 5-12 can enjoy this story as an LC. This book satisfies UDL guidelines 8.1 and 9.2 as well as ESOL strategies 5 and 8. I found a teaching guide on how to teach this book, included with guided questions and extension activities. https://media.btsb.com/TitleLessonPlans/597.pdf#LAE3414sp19 8mo
sydneydaniels I read this as my individual reading. What a great book! 8mo
DrSpalding We love Ivan! I would absolutely use this as a literature circle and I believe you are correct that it goes far beyond the elementary level 8mo

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate

The One and Only Ivan is a F book by Katherine Applegate that received a Newbery Medal. This book is about Ivan, a Silverback Gorilla, and his other animal friends stuck in cages at a mall, not knowing what it‘s like to love a normal life. This book is definitely for children in around the 4th grade. I think this book should be read as a LC so your students can talk about their feelings from the book and what they think will happen next.

taywise393 This link https://media.btsb.com/TitleLessonPlans/597.pdf provides discussion questions that I think would be great for students in their LC groups. Some ESOL accommodations are 2 and 10 because of the cooperation in small group settings. Some UDL principles are 6.1 & 6.2. Students being able to set their goals within the book will make them more attainable. #LAE3414SP19 8mo
KAdudu I just recently finished reading this book, it was amazing and would for sure recommend everyone to read. 8mo
DrSpalding That is the best resource you could have hyperlinked. I am happy you enjoyed this read! 8mo

I would use this realistic fiction novel in my classroom for a literature circle. The book has won the sunshine State young readers award. This novel is about Ivan, and easy-going gorilla. He lives at the exit 8 big top mall, he has a custom to being watched by humans in his glass cage. He barely thinks about his past life in the jungle, rather, he spends his time thinking about his friends Stella and Bob.

SofiaRoselli This is a great lesson plan to use in your classroom for the book. It provides standards, resources, modeling and extension activities. This lesson plan includes background knowledge which covers you UDL 3.1. I would be using ESOL strategy 2 by placing students in literature circles as a small group.

DrSpalding Awesome book! Wrong #! LAE3414sp19 is correct. 8mo
DrSpalding Wonderful resource from a quality source. When animals speak in a book, it cannot be considered realistic fiction. What would the correct genre be? 8mo
hkeiger Huge fan of the One and Only Ivan!! Thank you for the lesson plan! Looks great :) 8mo

If you need a good cry, go pick up this jewel. This Newbery Award winning F story is such a great story of friendship between a beloved gorilla and elephant living in a strip mall. There are so many other great characters in this story who develop the amazing and heartfelt story of life in the strip mall! Your 4th and 5th graders will love hearing a story told from a gorilla, which is why this would definitely be a great LC choice! #LAE3414sp19

SofiaRoselli I also used this book!! It was such a great one. I definitely got emotional throughout the book as well. I feel like this would be a perfect book for my future classroom. 8mo
DrSpalding Several of your peers, of course have read this book and I am sure you are not alone regarding the crying! Remember that you must cite a resource and align universal design and English learner principles for full credit. 8mo
melindamcmullen84 https://media.btsb.com/TitleLessonPlans/597.pdf This site is a 4 page lesson plan and is wonderful! I could see a ton of small group discussions happening. UDL 9.3 is great for LCs-making sure they stay accountable! ESOL 2, 7 and 10 will work great for small groups! 8mo

“The One and Only Ivan” is a Caldecott Award winning piece of modern fantasy (F). This tells the story of a gorilla named Ivan who is stuck in a small, inadequate cage at indoor mall. This book follows his and his friends heartwarming journey towards escape. This would definitely be a good literature circle book (LC). #LAE3414sp19

wmaxflowers Lesson Plan:

This lesson plan would align well with UDL principle 3.2 and ESOL 44.

This F Caldecott winner is a great addition to any classroom as an IR. Inspired by the true story of a gorilla who spent 30 years alone in a cage at an indoor zoo in a mall, this beautiful book imagines what that gorilla might have felt and said about his life. These unforgettable characters overflow with pain and love in an ultimately hopeful story about the healing power of art. UDL9.1 would work well to set expectations for independent reading.

kkimmelman ESOL 43 could work well to have students underline important facts as they read through the text. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Comprehension-Exam-The-One-And-Only-... This lesson plan testing comprehension could ensure students are grasping the important details of the book. #LAE3414sp19 8mo

The Newbury medal seal says it all. The One And Only Ivan (F) is a novel written by Katherine Applegate. It follows Ivan, a silverback gorilla, who lives his life day to day in his domain. However his domain isn‘t what you think it would be. His domain is a cage in a mall off of a highway. Although he cannot do much, he makes the most of it with his friends ranging from a baby elephant to a little girl. Highly recommend!
#LAE3414SP19

MGrace15 The separate chapters or sections make this a great LC or IR book. UDL 3.2 Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. ESOL strategy 50. For content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities, such as; strip stories, KWL activities, SQ3R, learning logs, role playing activities, close strategy, etc. 8mo
MGrace15 https://media.btsb.com/TitleLessonPlans/597.pdf by the publisher Harper provides an awesome discussion guide for the book. 8mo

🦍🐘🐕If you love books like Charlotte‘s Web or The Cricket in Times Square, in the sense that there is an animal narrator, Katherine Applegate‘s The Only and Only Ivan is for you. This 2013 Newbery Award winning F book is inspired by the true story of a silverback gorilla named Ivan who lived in a cage at a mall for 27 years. This book deals with heavy topics like animal rights, neglect, and death. #LAE3414sp19

ha_kaye The One and Only Ivan would make a good LC or RA. I feel like with the topics that this book entails, students need to hear how others reacted it. This link would be great for either teaching strategy since it provides discussion questions, extension activities, and an informational piece on Ivan. https://media.btsb.com/TitleLessonPlans/597.pdf 8mo
ha_kaye UDL principle 8.3, foster collaboration and community, works with both teaching strategies since students would be coming together to talk about The One and Only Ivan. EL strategy 19 would work well with both an LC or RA because they would (ideally) be held at the same time every day. 8mo
giont I want to read this book! The resource you shared for it is great! LC‘s is a great choice, it‘s always better to have peers to discuss the book with :) thanks for sharing! 8mo
