Beat poet, rapper, Malaysian-Australian, Omar Musa, writes about what it means to be a disaffected, disempowered young man in multicultural Australia. The hip hop flow def came through in the lyricism of the writing. Pretty cool actually! #booktober #diversereads @RealLifeReading

At the tender age of 18, a friend lent me a borrowed copy of Perfume. It was amaaaazing and changed the way I thought about how I should spend my life as a reader - looking for new, interesting stories, rather than reading within only one or two genres. And certainly it catalysed an ongoing love for French literature! I remember making the trip to return this as a changed woman. #booktober #somethingborrowed @RealLifeReading

Nothing makes me happier than opening a recent second hand book purchase to find a bookmark inside! My favourites have been a business card in Swedish, an old plane boarding pass and this fun flag playing card (currently in use). Even better... It's an Ace of Spades! #booktober #bookmarks #motorheadforthewin @RealLifeReading

There is a lot to be said for judging a book by its cover! This pretty book contains an equally sweet story, complete with my favourite curmudgeonly character of 2015. (Ove obviously wins that title for 2016!) And it's set in Australia! #booktober #debutnovels @RealLifeReading

It was so fascinating to read a book that treated bananas and elephants as as fantastical as people with their faces in their chests, and which was so popularly read across medieval and renaissance Europe. Likewise, it amazes me that some armchair adventurer in 14th century England/France could so accurately describe elephants, if not so 'long apples' (hehe). #booktober #fullofadventure @RealLifeReading

Pickpick

Australian Mums are lucky to have books like Baby Love (and my other favourite, Up the Duff) to take the guess work and stress out of life with a newborn.

Oh me oh my how I love this book!! And there it goes, back into the TBR pile for a revisit of one of the (many) most pleasurable reading experiences of my life :) #reallifereading #booktober #text-onlycovers

In a used bookstore, I spy this book, high high high up, on a shelf about 8ft off the ground. The well past middle age bookstore owner proceeds to climb a ladder to fetch it down for me. I feel so bad for making her do that, that despite the $25 price tag(!!!), I buy the book. Now I am scared to read it, for fear it falls well short of the hype!! #reallifereading #booktober #bookssetinsamerica

Read the first few pages of this a few weeks back when I was looking for a book for another reading challenge. Didn't fit the challenge, but captured my interest so much that this was moved to the top of the TBR pile as my most anticipated read!
