The Unknown Errors of Our Lives
The Unknown Errors of Our Lives: Stories | Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
4 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
In nine poignant stories spiked with humor and intelligence, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni captures lives at crossroad momentscaught between past and present, home and abroad, tradition and fresh experience. A widow in California, recently arrived from India, struggles to adapt to a world in which neighbors are strangers and her domestic skills are deemed superfluous in the award-winning Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter. In The Intelligence of Wild Things, a woman from Sacramento visits her brother in Vermont to inform him that back in Calcutta their mother is dying. And in the title story, a painter looks to ancient myth and the example of her grandmother for help in navigating her first real crisis of faith. Knowing, compassionate and expertly rendered, the stories in The Unknown Errors of Our Lives depict the eternal struggle to find a balance between the pull of home and the allure of change. From the Trade Paperback edition.

#immigrantsong I chose Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni #because she‘s is one of my all time favorite authors. These two books are her collections of short stories that talk about the Indian-American experience and the struggle that happens while trying to exist between two cultures. Her writing is poetic and lovely. I love her. #BeatleMaynia #MayMovieMagic

Tamra I‘ve not heard of her, stacked! 6y

zuzia She is also my favorite author! I love her books! 6y
Reggie @eggs Thanks!! @zuzia Sister of My Heart is one of my all time favorite books. And I know it probably won‘t ever end this way, but I always hoped she would write a 3rd book where Sudha, Sunil, and Dayita ended up together. 6y
Reggie @Tamra she‘s soooo good. Start with Sister of My Heart if you ever give her a chance. 6y

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is my #girlonfire for giving a voice to the women's immigrant experience from India to America in two different collections of short stories. One of my favorite stories "The Blooming Season for Cacti", deals with two women far away from home, while under the employ of a thug, find an unsuspected love and strength in each other. Her prose tells you she's a poet. All her stories are wonderful and thought provoking.

Cinfhen Not familiar with this author/poet but will certainly be trying one of her books! Thanks for sharing 💜 8y
Reggie @cinfhen if you read anything of hers read Sister of My Heart, there's even a Star Wars twist in the end. But seriously, its in my top ten. 8y
Cinfhen Didn't realize it's the same author, I've heard of Sister of My Heart...my daughter read it in HS and loved it! I probably have her copy somewhere in the states...I'm gonna look this summer💕 8y
