White Apples
White Apples | Jonathan Carroll
7 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
Vincent Ettrich, a genial philanderer, discovers he has died and come back to life, but he has no idea why, or what the experience was like. Gradually, he discovers he was brought back by his true love, Isabelle, because she is pregnant with their child a child who, if raised correctly, will play a crucial role in saving the universe. But to be brought up right, the child must learn what Vincent learned on the other side if only Vincent can remember it. On a father's love and struggle may depend the future of everything that is.By turns quirky, romantic, awesome, and irresistible, "White Apples" is a tale of love, fatherhood, death, and life that will leave you seeing the world with new eyes."

First book read second in the Vincent Ettrich series. Another story about tricking life, death and Chaos. Making my way through Jonathan Carroll‘s books but not sure if I‘ll finish them all by the end of the year, but I think I‘ve completed my collection of his hard to find books, and sometimes spending too much 💸

Vincent is resurrected by his unborn magic child who can psychically communicate with his mother. Together with a sexy guide from Purgatory they must stop Chaos from breaking God.

Started slow with a cast of unpleasant characters, but once the story dissolved into bizzaro set pieces I had a pretty good time.

Warning: something graphically violent happens to a baby elephant.

If you‘re never going to read this check the spoiler in the comments.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk So the big twist at the end is that, in addition to the sexy guide from Purgatory, Vincent and his beloved Isabelle have also been watched over the whole time by an elderly black man who is essentially the physical incarnation of an orgasm that Isabelle had one time. Sentient orgasm guardian angel - not words I had planned on writing today. (edited) 7y
saresmoore WOW. I ordered The Wooden Sea today now I‘m feeling more prepared for the weirdness to come. Did you mean to spoiler tag that comment? 👆 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore Yep, the spoiler tag was intended. That particular insane reveal that I had to mention happens at the very very end. I hope you enjoy The Wooden Sea! Just go with the crazy flow. 7y
mabell It isn't showing up as spoiler on my end? 7y

Don‘t worry, it‘s not really a giant talking rat. That would be crazy!

It is actually the soul of Vincent Ettrich from the first time that he died, before he was resurrected by his still-in-utero magic child. The rat is trying to convince Vincent that he belongs dead.

I wasn‘t enjoying the first 1/2 of this book, but I‘ve read enough Carroll to trust him. After the big info-dump scene about God being a mosaic of all dead souls it has picked up.

saresmoore I‘m not even sure where to file this in my brain. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore You should probably read a Jonathan Carroll book, just for the experience. I recommend 7y

Argh! After posting last week about how much I hate to read things out of order, I started Glass Soup last night then noticed this morning in a post by @GrilledCheeseSamurai that White Apples comes first.

I‘m slipping! But luckily it was on my Kindle in a matter of moments so let‘s try this again.

Starting.

DeborahSmall Love this so much! Enjoy 7y
