Joss Whedon
Joss Whedon: The Biography | Amy Pascale
10 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
The first in-depth biography of the greatest show-runner in contemporary TV history and director of the third-highest-grossing movie of all time From the cult favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which netted four million viewers per episode, to the summer blockbusterThe Avengers, which amassed a box office of $1.5 billion, Joss Whedon has made a name for himself in Hollywood for his penchant for telling meaningful, personal tales about love, death, and redemption even against the most dramatic and larger-than-life backdrops. This biography follows his development from a creative child and teenager who spent years away from his family at an elite English public school, through his early successes—which often turned into frustrating heartbreak in both television (Roseanne) and film (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)—to his breakout turn as the creator, writer, and director of theBuffy television series. Extensive, original interviews with Whedon's family, friends, collaborators, and stars—and with the man himself—offer candid, behind-the-scenes accounts of the making of groundbreaking series such asBuffy, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse, as well as new stories about his work with Pixar writers and animators during the creation ofToy Story. Most importantly, however, these conversations present an intimate and revealing portrait of a man whose creativity and storytelling ability have manifested themselves in comics, online media, television, and film.

Finished this yesterday I liked it, I didn‘t love it. I felt it became overly detailed in some of the studio issues with Buffy, and glossed over other events. However, over all it was fair and largely enjoyable. (The Nancy Drew bookmark is a reference to a humorous story about a fight Joss and his wife had surrounding a bag of found ND books they were reading together, and she finished while he was sleeping.) It is a fun read if you are a fan.

I really enjoyed this. I am a huge Whedon fan, though generally not a fan at all of biographies. However, I found myself saying, "Wow, that's cool" enough to know this really was a good book. If you love Whedon (and you should), this is a must-read.

Not always a fan of nonfiction, and certainly not biographies, but I am loving this so far.

"It was amazing. Four hours at a stretch [...] completely prying open the text of Hamlet. I mean, what more fun can there be?... Spoken like a man who never had sex in high school."

Joss Whedon is one of my favourite people. I always knew he was brilliant. I love this quotation - it makes me laugh and as a fellow Shakespeare nerd, I totally get it. I'm definitely enjoying this book, and I have just started!

My husband DIY'd a sock advent calendar for me for Christmas! every day I take a picture of my new socks. Today I am spending the day reading, so I took this picture with today's socks. Perfect reading choice today, since last night Ilmy husband asked me, as is not an uncommon question, to stay up late drinking and watching Joss Whedon musicals.

Eyelit Lovely way to spend an evening - and great socks! 8y

Still reading the Joss Whedon bio and it turns out he's a Veronica Mars fan, because of course he is. I think it's about time I binge watch that series again. (Photo: late night with Joss Whedon and my three cats)

Now that I'm done with Scratch, I can focus on the Joss Whedon bio, which I put aside two years ago so I could watch the entirety of Buffy and then start in on Angel without spoilers. (I came to Joss via Firefly.) Fun read for this fan girl.
