Fearless Girls, Wise Women, and Beloved Sisters: Heroines in Folktales from Around the World
Fearless Girls, Wise Women, and Beloved Sisters: Heroines in Folktales from Around the World | Kathleen Ragan
8 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
One hundred great folk tales and fairy tales from all over the world about strong, smart, brave heroines. A definitive sourcebook of folktales and fairytales and the first of its kind to feature a variety of multicultural heroines. Dismayed by the predominance of male protagonists in her daughters' books, Kathleen Ragan set out to collect the stories of our forgotten heroines. Gathered from around the world, from regions as diverse as sub-Saharan Africa and Western Europe, from North and South American Indian cultures and New World settlers, from Asia and the Middle East, these 100 folktales celebrate strong female heroines. Fearless Girls, Wise Women, and Beloved Sisters is for all women who are searching to define who they are, to redefine the world and shape their collective sensibility. It is for men who want to know more about what it means to be a woman. It is for our daughters and our sons, so that they can learn to value all kinds of courage, courage in battle and the courage of love. It is for all of us to help build a more just vision of woman. Fearless Girls, Wise Women, and Beloved Sisters breaks new ground by reexamining our notions about heroism. This book will appeal to parents who want to foster positive role models for their children. An invaluable resource of multicultural heroines for any school library.

Pickpick

This collection features 100 folk tales from around the world about girls and women who actually do things: they rescue each other as well as the princes they woo; with their sharp wit, they demonstrate the danger of underestimating a woman‘s intellect; and they prove the power of peacemaking in the midst of war. Not every story won me over, but for the most part, this is a refreshing alternative to the helpless damsel-in-distress fairy tales.

alysonimagines P.S. This was one of my February myth/fairy tale retold picks for #LitsyATXReadersSociety. 4y

Three are mine (I kind of went overboard this month cause I LOVE this theme) - and I‘m super excited to read all the ones talked about by other members!

1. My latest bargain ebook! (What can I say, my weekends are all booked. 😂)
2. Nope but that would be fun. #AustinTX anyone?
3. Breakfast! Any combo of cereal, bananas, pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns, or chicken sausage—maybe with some salsa. 😋
4. Navy blue with embroidery around the neckline.
5. 28. But six of them are series so I think I should get extra credit. 😉

alysonimagines @MinDea Yasss!! My fave is Trader Joe‘s Harvest Salsa, which I stock up on every fall. So good with scrambled eggs! 6y
MinDea Never tried that! We get their salsa from time to time. I will have to look for it this fall! 6y

Almost immediately after I got an idea yesterday for writing a feminist fairy tale to round out the story collection I‘ve been working on, I discovered this via @bookriot Deal of the Day. What are the odds?? I had never heard of it before, and the timing was perfect. Synchronicity happening for sure. And it‘s still on sale at Amazon last I checked!

Finished this in the nick of time! I needed a fairytale from another culture to complete my Round the Year in 52 Books Challenge. Loved some of these female-centred fairy tales more than others. But loved reading the ways women are portrayed in fairy tales around the world 🌘 #christmastimereads #7booksin7days #book5
