Old Path White Clouds
Old Path White Clouds: The Life Story of the Buddha | Thich Nhat Hanh
5 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
The Buddha was the source. Venerable Svasti and the young buffalo boys were rivers that flowed from the source. Wherever the rivers flowed, the Buddha would be there. In Old Path White Clouds, the world's revered master of mindfulness, Thich Nhat Hanh, retells the story of the Buddha in his own inimitably beautiful style. He draws upon Pali, Sanskrit and Chinese sources to trace the Buddhas life slowly and gently through the course of eighty years. Seen partly through the eyes of the Buddha himself and partly through those of Svasti, the buffalo boy, Old Path White Clouds brings the Buddha closer to us as we journey with him on his path to enlightenment and nirvana.

I've finished 'Book One' in Old Path, White Clouds and I'm really liking it so far😊 I love the way Thich Nhat Hanh writes, particularly the way the Buddha's teachings are interwoven with his life story. Excited for 'Book Two'!

An account of the Buddha's life and teachings.
Gently and lovingly told - a very peaceful read.

I spent the weekend in noble silence at a retreat which meant no speaking, eye contact, or reading. Nobody said I couldn't take pictures of the shelves in the library though! #readingenvy

CocoReads I'd be good with all but the no reading thing. 8y
ReadingEnvy @CocoReads that was my fear too, but I was okay. I was able to still write in my journal. 8y
Texreader That's pretty tough unless I could do some of my crafting. Wow. 8y

CocoReads @ReadingEnvy well, still being able to write would be good. I could get into that. 8y
Lacythebookworm I would love to do something like that! 8y
Betty_Bookworm I'm just wondering why they have a library if they don't want you to read!? 8y
HardcoverHearts I adore Thich Nhat Hanh and his writing is beautiful. Good for you for doing a silent retreat! 👏🏻 8y
ReadingEnvy @Lacythebookworm I'm already planning my next one, going for longer! 8y
ReadingEnvy @Betty_Bookworm The center is used for other things. My friend told me at another place they cover the bookshelves during silent retreat! 8y
ReadingEnvy @HardcoverHearts do you have any favorite Thich nhat hanh? 8y
ReadingEnvy @Texreader I bet crafting could be done mindfully! I was thinking how nice it would have been to do something like bake bread, something with my hands. 8y
HardcoverHearts I love The Heart of Understanding (on the Heart Sutra) and The Diamond That Cuts Through Illusion (about the Diamond Sutra). His manner of writing is so beautiful and simple yet profound. He is one of the greats. 8y
Betty_Bookworm @ReadingEnvy ahhhh. I see. I go to Buddha camp/retreat every summer. Silence is optional at my place. I've tried it. It's an amazing experience. 8y
Tamra I'd be on board until 5 p.m. 😊 8y
ReadingEnvy @Betty_Bookworm oh great! What else goes on there? 8y
Betty_Bookworm @ReadingEnvy It's Tibetan Buddhist so lots of chanting. Meditation. Up in the Catskills. 8y
