Finding Gratitude | Compendium
post image

I‘ve done this before and I think it helps me feel better if I start feeling sorry for myself but I don‘t always remember to do it. I try to tell myself when I‘m feeling sorry for myself that things could be worse and other people have it worse than I do and that helps too. Journaling helps me too. Sometimes, I don‘t journal if I don‘t have anything to share.

#mentalhealthmonday

Kerrbearlib Journaling also helps me. Thanks for sharing! 1mo

It benefits me personally to try to catch and catalog the little glimmers of hope and joy in my own life when I am feeling down.

It does not behoove me to impose gratitude on other people. It can make them feel like I am invalidating their feelings and experiences. I do not live in others' shoes.

Also, sometimes people expect me to be grateful for things I'm not actually happy about.

Not in the way it‘s been weaponized in our culture. And I am relieved yet saddened to see that I am not in the minority here in my response. Gratitude is a beautiful thing, but it is too often used as a cudgel and a gag on the suffering.

TheBookHippie 🎯 a tool of the oppressor. 1mo
Susanita Practicing gratitude can useful, but yes sometimes I think I “should” be grateful when I‘m really not feeling it. That‘s not helpful. 1mo

#MentalHealthMonday

I experienced emotional abuse as a child. When I tried to defend myself, I was told to shut up & be grateful. For years, I thought gratitude = toxic positivity & manipulation. Today, I know genuine gratitude is good for my mental health. I like to think about boring things I‘m grateful for - toilet plungers, toenail clippers, the lint filter in my dryer, etc. They‘re not pretty, but they make life better. ⬇️

Kerrbearlib Practicing gratitude is good for my mental health, as long as it‘s genuine & not being done to ignore problems or deny reality. ⬇️ (edited) 1mo
Kerrbearlib It‘s important now that we recognize the difference between genuine gratitude & manipulative gratitude. An example of manipulative gratitude: Trump angrily demanding his supporters stop focusing on Epstein and instead focus on the great things his administration has done.To be clear, I don‘t think he‘s done anything great. But his supporters do. To get them to shut up about Epstein, he must manipulate them to focus on something else. ⬆️ (edited) 1mo
IriDas That is an interesting idea, being grateful for innocuous things. 1mo

CSeydel I agree with you 100% and I‘m sorry people are jumping on you for this. I‘m sorry those people have had the negative experiences that caused them to think that way, but I have found that genuinely, mindfully turning my mind toward gratitude has improved (and continues to improve) my attitude, my mood, and my behavior toward others. Best wishes and I hope you are well. ✌️ 1mo

CatLass007 I love the idea of being grateful for lint traps and other small things that we just take for granted. I am going to make every effort to do just that. Today I am grateful for something a little bigger than that but after my surgery, I finally got to eat today. And for lunch, they gave me potato soup, which is my favorite. It was so good, I asked for it for dinner and for breakfast in the morning. I am grateful for the excellent care (cont)⬇️ 1mo
CatLass007 I am receiving here in the hospital. There has not been a bad Apple in the bunch. I also am grateful for something that happened on Monday. The registered dietitian here at the hospital came by my room. My mom also was a registered dietitian and the woman here knew my mom. She said that my mom was her favorite dietitian she had ever worked with. I know my mom made a lot of impact on many people‘s lives. But getting to meet those (cont)⬇️ 1mo
CatLass007 people is absolutely exceptional. I am grateful for my mom, and I am grateful for meeting people who knew and loved her. 1mo

1. Coloring
2. Listening to music after showering
3. Reading
4. Journaling. One night, I had a bad dream that had my ex bf in it. It scared me because he scares me so I journaled about it. Recently, I was asleep and a thought came to my mind that I‘d be hearing from my ex bf online soon so I journaled about this too. I have severe anxiety. Nothing has happened yet so maybe it was just my anxiety talking to me.

Kerrbearlib Great list! Journaling is so helpful 1mo
