A Day of Fire
A Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii | Vicky Alvear Shecter, Stephanie Dray, E. Knight, Ben Kane, Sophie Perinot
3 posts | 7 read | 11 to read
Pompeii was a lively resort flourishing in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius at the height of the Roman Empire. When Vesuvius erupted in an explosion of flame and ash, the entire town would be destroyed. Some of its citizens died in the chaos, some escaped the mountain's wrath . . . and these are their stories: A boy loses his innocence in Pompeii's flourishing streets. An heiress dreads her wedding day, not knowing it will be swallowed by fire. An ex-legionary stakes his entire future on a gladiator bout destined never to be finished. A crippled senator welcomes death, until a tomboy on horseback comes to his rescue. A young mother faces an impossible choice for her unborn child as the ash falls. A priestess and a whore seek redemption and resurrection as the town is buried. Six authors bring to life overlapping stories of patricians and slaves, warriors and politicians, villains and heroes who cross each others' path during Pompeii's fiery end. But who will escape, and who will be buried for eternity?

I enjoyed this book written by six authors about various people right before and right after the Pompeii eruption.

Thanks @Cinfhen turns out I couldn‘t get through the Harris book either.

Good choice of a time period for #BookedInTime @Cuilin It was new to me.

TheBookgeekFrau Sounds interesting - Stacked! 1y
Cuilin #RomanCivilization ✅🎉 sounds like an interesting read. 1y
Cinfhen Ohhhh, I‘m glad you picked it up!! It was definitely easier to read and helped bring Pompeii to life. It really helped me visualize the vibrancy and devastation that occurred in Pompeii while I was there visiting last week. 1y

Loved this collaboration of interconnected vignettes revolving around the people of Pompeii in the hours before, during and immediately after the eruption of Mt. Veseveus. Each story/ chapter was written by a different author. Audio read by multiple narrators. I‘m off to Naples and the Amalfi Coast in 10 days so I‘m trying to read about Pompeii before visiting. Any other suggestions?!?

Susanita The movie with John Snow is pretty cheesy but entertaining in its own way. 1y
Bookwormjillk I'm reading Pompeii by Robert Harris now for #BookedInTime. It's not bad- good summer reading. This sounds better though. 1y
Cinfhen I bought Pompeii by Robert Harris but it‘s not holding my attention @Bookwormjillk I‘m gonna try again before it gets donated to the charity bookshop 😄 1y
