Jenna, a contemporary Muscogee (Creek) girl in Oklahoma, wants to honor a family tradition by jingle dancing at the next powwow. But where will she find enough jingles for her dress? An unusual, warm family story, beautifully evoked in Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu's watercolor art. Fantastic. Poetically written, but completely understandable for kids, which is a tough line to balance. Present-day setting, which is a great, as it is not common enough for Native characters in children's literature. And it is just cute and fun and colorful, too. Excellent, and I can't wait to include it in a storytime program.

LibrarianRyan I would love to see a list of all the native books you have recently read when you get the time. Your library must have an extensive collection as I have never seen so many in one place, and I would love to be able to share it with other librarians. 5y
Krisjericho @librarianryan I will put something together as soon as I have time! It is one of the areas of my collection that I try to read everything and make sure it is well-covered. :) 5y

A touching story about a little girl that wants to find “jingles” for her dress to make it sing. ❤️ I‘m ready for powwow season!

#StartsWithJ I read this awesome #picturebook for my early childhood resources & services class. I love how much the protagonist cares about her culture & wants to participate in the ceremonies. Likewise, the support she receives from the women in her Native American community is heartwarming. I definitely recommend it! #AndItsAugust @RealLifeReading

Jenna is anxious to try the Jingle Dance at the next powwow, and with the encouragement of her grandma, great-aunt, cousin and neighbor she works hard to prepare. Each woman gives Jenna one row of jingles from her own dress so that she'll have enough to make a dress that sings.

This is a great story about present day American Indian life. Great for grade schoolers and could be paired with watching a clip on jingle dancing.
