When recently orphaned Barnaby Gaunt is sent to stay with his uncle on a beautiful remote island off the coast of Canada, he is all set to have the perfect summer holiday. Except there is one small problem: His uncle is trying to kill him.Heir to a ten-million-dollar fortune, Barnaby tries to tell everyone and anyone that his uncle is after his inheritance, but no one will believe him. That is, until he tells the only other child on the island, Chrissie, who concludes that there is only one way for Barnaby to stop his demonic uncle: He will just have to kill him first. With the unexpected help of One-Ear, the aged cougar who has tormented the island for years, Chrissie and Barnaby hatch a foolproof plan.Playful, dark, and witty, "Let's Kill Uncle" is a surprising tale of two ordinary children who conspire to execute an extraordinary murder-and get away with it.Praise for Let's Kill Uncle: "Playfully sinister."-"Washington Post""A dark, whimsical, startling book, far ahead of its time."-Donna Tartt

Let‘s Kill Uncle is a fun, fast-paced adventure that‘s filled with dark humor! Even if I don‘t approve of the idea encapsulated in the title!

Other titles I really enjoy are Lies My Teacher Told Me (which had me infuriated about the history we teach in schools) and Little Women. I loved Little Women, but HATED the ending. I‘m not looking to start any fights here, but I won‘t back down from that statement! 😜

Whew. It took longer than I'd have liked for the children to try sabotaging the airplane -- in my own murderous heart, that would have been Plan A. But the fun of this book isn't really the murdering so-much as the characters at the edges.

I adore the mountain lion.

A pick. I'll look up more by this author.

The depiction of child abuse is legitimately nauseating. Uncle is evil to a cartoonish level, but the writing is horrifying without being gratuitous or ever utilizing the word 'abuse' (emotional/manipulative on-page, physical mentioned as part of backstory and in a rather minimizing way).

esurient In-setting (1950s Canada), corporal punishment is described as 'old-fashioned' and given the general impression of being rather frowned-upon, although adult characters wistfully wish they could lean on that when dealing with the thoughtless and frankly cruel actions of the children when they first arrived. (The town meeting(s) following those actions I've not quoted, but the concensus building was amusing -- end-result, the children have to do... 3y

I'm choosing to believe this is self-aware humor, using a child character as a mouthpiece for sarcasm.

Christie (age 10) is wonderfully straightforward in her thought processes.

1963 novel, set in the 1950s.

diovival @LeahBergen I read it years ago and remember enjoying it. Two 10 year olds vs one very wicked uncle. Fun times. 8y

Pickpick

I'm a bit disturbed by this book, it may be about children but it's probably not for children. Excitingly and unusually most of the tension and creepiness comes from what goes unwritten rather than what is explicit. Took a little time to get into but don't let insight into the mind of a cougar put you off. Brought to me by Auckland City Libraries and my cute hammerhead shark card #mylocallibrary #riotgrams

Aninski That card! 😍 8y

I haven't read this reissue of a 1963 book with #childprotagonists yet but the title, blurb by Donna Tartt, AND Gorey illustration on the inside cover made me throw my money at it. It sounds freaky! #PhotoADayNov16

EvieBee Bummed I didn't get this paperback edition. I bought the Kindle book years ago but have yet to read it. Gorgeous book! 8y
