Out of Sorts
Out of Sorts: Making Peace with an Evolving Faith | Sarah Bessey
From the popular blogger and provocative author of Jesus Feminist comes a riveting new study of Christianity that helps you wrestle withand sort outyour faith. In Out of Sorts, Sarah Besseyaward-winning blogger and author of Jesus Feminist, which was hailed as lucid, compelling, and beautifully written (Frank Viola, author of Gods Favorite Place on Earth)helps us grapple with core Christian issues using a mixture of beautiful storytelling and biblical teaching, a style well described as narrative theology. As she candidly shares her wrestlings with core issuessuch as who Jesus is, what place the Church has in our lives, how to disagree yet remain within a community, and how to love the Bible for what it is rather than what we want it to beshe teaches us how to walk courageously through our own tough questions. In the process of gently helping us sort things out, Bessey teaches us how to be as comfortable with uncertainty as we are with solid answers. And as we learn to hold questions in one hand and answers in the other, we discover new depths of faith that will remain secure even through the storms of life.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I love Bessey‘s worldview, it is very similar to my own, but while there were strong chapter messages, there wasn‘t a strong book message. I do think Bessey allows readers in to see different aspects of her faith& how her relationship to God/church/spirit has changed &that could help readers who haven‘t really delved in, look at what they believe& make the necessary changes. It‘s a good one that I‘d recommend but not my fav in this genre.

Booo 1 for #superseptember is done! I will read everything Bessey ever writes. She makes me want to know Jesus better, to live more bravely and boldly. Her words are a true gift and this book about the grace and beauty of not having the answers is so deeply needed right now.

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y

The liturgy of the charismatic evangelicals is empty to me. Dead religion perhaps. Every prayer begins with Father, we just... And I find myself admitting, Father, I just can't hear you here anymore. Maybe I never did.

Totally having a Holy holy ? moment with this book. I started reading this 2 years ago when my "sorting" was in its infancy. I put it down just a few paragraphs before this passage. Just wow. #springcleaningreadathon

Ironically my first pick for #springcleaningreadathon also accurately describes my #springcleaning style 😱

It was somehow easier when life and faith and God were an exercise in rule making and literalism, in black-and-white cause and effect.

I loved this book. I had it out from the library but I want to get it on kindle so I can underline all the things. Sarah's writing is gorgeous and this was all really relatable. For anyone who has ever felt out of place in the church or in their own faith, Sarah breathes grace into those spaces that are so difficult to talk about. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The author speaks bravely ( at least to a raised-in-a-small-southern-church-girl) about our responsibility to really question and test our faith and beliefs. It's the only way to live authentically. Great thought-provoking book. I will be rereading this one for sure.

" I had to learn that taking the Bible seriously doesn't mean taking everything literally. I had to learn to read the whole Bible through the lens of Jesus, and I had to learn to stop making it something it wasn't- a glorified answer book or rule book or magic spell."
