A trade paperback reissue of National Book Award finalist Mary Gaitskills debut collection, Bad Behaviorpowerful stories about dislocation, longing, and desire which depict a disenchanted and rebellious urban fringe generation that is searching for human connection. Now a classic: Bad Behavior made critical waves when it first published, heralding Gaitskills arrival on the literary scene and her establishment as one of the sharpest, erotically charged, and audaciously funny writing talents of contemporary literature. Michiko Kakutani of The New York Times called it Pinteresque, saying, Ms. Gaitskill writes with such authority, such radar-perfect detail, that she is able to make even the most extreme situations seem real her reportorial candor, uncompromised by sentimentality or voyeuristic charmunderscores the strength of her debut.

Pickpick

This might be a little bit dated tbh. But as far as short stories go, definitely worth a read. I love that she manages to pull you into these tiny snippets of her characters' lives.

dabbe The book cover cracks me up. How often do you see an adult who looks like she's throwing a tantrum? 🤣 1y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 1y
vlwelser @dabbe such a weird cover. I mean who does a plank like that in that outfit? 😂 1y

Another short story from the Out of Line collection.
This one was uncomfortable and I'm not sure what the takeaway was supposed to be. It follows the story of a woman called for jury duty, mixed with a snippets of an interview of the man on trial.
This isn't listed in the litsy database

#readingwomenmonth short stories I haven't read yet again. Heard good things about this and look at this cover! I'm not sure if I love it or hate it, but it is eye catching.

Tonton Sounds great, but the cover is so..‘80‘s? 6y
Weaponxgirl @Tonton 1989 I'm surprised at how close to the 90s it is if I'm honest 6y
Tonton @Weaponxgirl Lol it‘s that particular shade of teal that is so Duran Duran MTV ish that dates it (edited) 6y

Zelma @Weaponxgirl well the 80s did last until about 1993. 😂 6y
Andrew65 That cover is a bit much! 😂 6y
arubabookwoman I like the cover—and it‘s perfect for Mary Gaitskill, though I haven‘t read this particular book by her. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Zelma good point, I was born in the 80s but don't remember much about it other than the cartoons and children's films 6y
Weaponxgirl @arubabookwoman I've heard great things about her writing, I think the cover is just very of its time period and the colours are not what I'd normally go towards. Saying that I will never get rid of this book because of the said cover. 😀 6y

Pickpick

Bad Behavior is about the lonely, the yearning and the depraved—from prostitutes and their johns to former lovers to people in unconventional S&M relationships. Gaitskill‘s characters long for connection, seeking it out however they can. Like most short story collections, some are much more interesting than others. At times, the themes become redundant, but the writing is consistently provocative.

This description says it all:
"Powerful stories of dislocation, longing, and desire which depict a disenchanted and rebellious urban fringe generation that is groping for human connection. (Or, more simply put, the angst of people-who-wear-black.)"

The film Secretary is based on one of these stories (but is much sweeter ❤).

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I've wanted to read this for a while. I hope it's good. 6y
batsy I still haven't read this! I loved Secretary, if that's not weird to say 😊 Great pick... Must read soon! 6y
readordierachel @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I have a copy but have only read the one story. I liked it. I've heard that the book is quite dark. 6y

Just read "Secretary". It was a good book that focuses on employer-employee, man-woman power dynamics. I would have loved to see the outcome and justice being served.

My first recommendation from #bklynbookmatch ! I also got recommended The Piano Teacher by Elfriede Jelinek, State of Wonder by Ann Patchett, and The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. You can get your own customized book recs by filling out the simple form at bklynlibrary.org/bookmatch with what you like or what you're looking for 😌 I think I'll do it again with different genres! (PS You don't even need a library card to use the service!)

Practicing for the Bad Behavior audio book, which you obviously need in your life. Go Mary!

vincentscarpa That's gonna be a killer audiobook. Fuck. 8y
PurityofEssence Now that I've seen this picture, I'll constantly be thinking of one thing while listening to the audiobook: what type of wine was she drinking while recording the narration? 🤔 8y
