Another Marvelous Thing
Another Marvelous Thing: Stories | Laurie Colwin
5 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
The poignant and perceptive tale of an affair, from intoxicating first kiss to bittersweet good-bye Josephine Billy Delielle and Francis Clemens are sleeping together. Both are economists and both are married to other people, but the similarities end there. He is fastidious; she is a slob. He delights in good food and fine wine; her refrigerator is always empty. He is old and sentimental; she is young and tough minded. This is not his first extramarital dalliance; she never imagined it was possible to love anyone but her husband. The desire that Billy and Francis feel for each other is as inexplicable as it is undeniable, and the moments they steal together are electrifying, tense, and reassuring all at once. Told from the alternating perspectives of two adulterous lovers,Another MarvelousThingis an exquisitely crafted story collection that tackles the thorniest of subjects with honesty, grace, and humor. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Laurie Colwin including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the authors estate.

Meant to upload this yesterday, but ya girl remembers things at the last minute, works on her little collage late at night, and then gets very sleepy trying to make sense of writing a caption ? So, here we are ?

This is my wrap-up for the #MarvellousMarch #readathon! Yay! ?

I successfully completed all 4 of my goals, although I do wish I'd be finished with "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" by now. I'm stretching that one out!

Good morning, Littens!

Here are a couple of my #readinggoals for the #MarvellousMarch #readathon! (Giving you ALL the hashbrowns!) ?

In addition to the above, I'd also like to finish any other current reads so I can get myself in prime position to start "The House in the Cerulean Sea" and give it my full attention!

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Great to have you with us. Good luck. 😊👍 Some great goals. (edited) 3y

After reading Katherine Heiny's upcoming STANDARD DEVIATION (which I *highly* recommend), I returned to Laurie Colwin's ANOTHER MARVELOUS THING. The epigraph for STANDARD DEVIATION is from this classic Colwin tale, and Heiny's writing evokes a sort of Colwinism (yes, I made up that word, so what) without being derivative. Pairing these two reads together is an explosion of awesomeness.

Taking a poll: What female novelists write the best dialogue? Any passionate opinions out there? I flagged Laurie Colwin on this post because she wrote amazing talk. And amazing everything else.

joe_hill Add: I love Elmore Leonard. By whenever people talk about great modern practitioners of dialogue he's the name that always comes up... Leonard or Richard Price. Looking for a little gender balance in the conversation about conversation. 8y
tkmadden Hmmm let me think on this. Grace Paley is incredible with dialogue but she's a story writer, not a novelist. 8y
BookNotes Really good question--and one I am blanking out on. 🤔😳 I need to think on this one, which is a good thing. 8y
Vlmitchell1 It will sound like I'm pandering, but I think Stephen King. It's like I hear the voices and particular speech cadence of each character. 8y
