One Hundred Leaves: A New Annotated Translation of the Hyakunin Isshu
One Hundred Leaves: A New Annotated Translation of the Hyakunin Isshu | Frank Watson
3 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
The Hyakunin Isshu is a poetry anthology beloved by generations of Japanese since it was compiled in the 13th century. Many Japanese know the poems by heart as a result of playing the popular card game version of the anthology. Collecting one poem each from one hundred poets living from the 7th century to the 13th century, the book covers a wide array of themes and personal styles. One Hundred Leaves is a new translation, complete with extensive notes, the original Japanese in calligraphic font, the pronunciation, and side-by-side art work beautifully illustrating each poem's theme. **NOTE** This is the Black & White edition. There is another edition available on Amazon in color.

I loved this anthology of Japanese poetry ranging from the 7th to 13th centuries. The tanka use wordplay and are about nature, seasons, and the time of day. Each poem includes an English translation, original Japanese, pronunciation, and literal translation and notes for each of the 100 poems. It also includes a woodblock print on each page, but there isn‘t any info about the prints which I would have liked too. I really enjoyed this!

@Desha Look what I got myself today! 😉 Just couldn't resist it when I went to the bookstore to get some books for work. Enjoying this now with some tea and traditional Japanese sweets, called mochi. This is the translation from William N. Porter.

Faibka How awesome!!!! I need to visit Japan! Enjoy 😊 7y
