THIS IS SO GOOD!!! Man that book had me so tightly in its grip that I had totally not realized that I had to get off the train if not a man had dragged me out of it, because Kyoto is the last stop and so everyone has to get out, but I was glued to the pages 🙈 Holy smokes, that was a first for me!

Yellowpigeon I usually hate series (cliff hangers, drawing our a story unnecessarily long). This was the first I was in the bookstore pre-ordering the next one. 6y
speljamr I just finished this one last week. I will be taking up the next two in a couple weeks. 6y
Tsubame @Yellowpigeon I'm not a series reader too, but this one is finished and contains only four books, so I gave it a chance and now I'm really glad I did! I wasn't sure if book 2 would be as captivating as the first, but a few pages in I ordered book 3 right away! 6y
Tsubame @speljamr I hope the shipping of book 3 will be faster than the previous ones, but then I also enjoy the wait and next time I'll reread the first two books before starting on the third. 6y

With each chapter the story is getting more and more complex and I'm glad I reread volume 1 before starting volume 2. The artwork is still beyond amazing and keeps distracting me with its gorgeousness, to be honest. Well, one more good reason to go over the pages again and again...

Faibka Wow, that artwork is very beautiful! 6y

This book is brilliant. Never before was I aware of how easily and instantly I categorize characters into 'good' and 'bad', because in this work those categories are constantly being thrown over, through adding layers which are often overlooked or not reflected. Hearn is an amazing storyteller and she obviously researched a LOT about medieval Japan and it's mythical folklore.
Honestly I didn't expect to be so taken with this book!

Tsubame Besides I just ordered the second book on Amazon and am truly bummed that the shipping will take between one and four months 😱 7y
vivastory I've been meaning to read these 7y
Yellowpigeon Love this series. I usually don't enjoy series but this one broke that notion 7y
See All 7 Comments
Tsubame @Yellowpigeon I'm also not a series reader, but when I know it's finished and the number of books is reasonable, I'm willing to give it a chance and now I'm a little on edge because I'll have to wait quite long for the second book to be delivered 🙈 7y
Yellowpigeon I'm not a fan because they generally end the book with a huge cliff hanger. I despise that. Tell a story and if it's good enough, I'll keep reading. 7y
Tsubame @Yellowpigeon Exact same here! A few weeks ago I read into a horrible cliffhanger, not knowing the book was going to have a sequel. Cliffhangers are the worst tool an author can make use of in my opinion. They make me rather turn away entirely from an author, instead of keeping up with their works. 7y
Yellowpigeon Yes!! I was reading a romance book and already decided I wasn't continuing with the series. The book ended with an "is she pregnant" cliff hanger. Thank God for plot synopsis 7y

I've been thinking about #5fordinner but to be honest, I wouldn't want to have dinner with any authors I read. For some reason I want there to be a distance between them and me. It's their books, the result of their hard work, which counts for me and their books make things possible that mostly aren't in real life. But I want the illusion and by getting to know the author I'd feel as if the mystery would vanish.

Continued in comments

Tsubame So that's why I'd rather have an empty dining table (photo from google by the way). But thanks for tagging @BookHermit it was interesting to think about it and I've been asking myself back and forth for a couple of hours who I'd like to invite. I realized myself now, why I couldn't decide ☺️ 7y

It was an overall very underwhelming read for me, although the story and characters held a great potential. The language was somewhat dull and the characters development was poor and shallow. I wonder how much that is due to the translation though... what a pity, it could've been really awesome!

The story is interesting enough so far to keep me going, but I really wish it was better written/translated. The language is a bit dull and descriptions of characters as well as the world in which this happens fall rather flat...

Swallows always catch my eye, I love them so much and this book starts incredibly promising:
"I had always wanted to be a jongleur, to leap from the shoulders of another, to fly and tumble, to dare myself in thin air with nothing but my arms and legs to land me safely on the ground. An acrobat is not a bird, but it is the closest a person can come to being free in the air. The nearest to an angel's gift of flying."
Will be my new commute read.

LauraBeth Beautiful! I think out of all the birds, swallows are the most fun to watch in the air. 7y
Tsubame @LauraBeth Absolutely! Although I think they are especially adorable when they're in their nests and chat and bicker at each other 😆 7y
LauraBeth There was a cavity in my old office building that swallows nested in every year. Everyone in the office wanted to kill them because as soon as you walked out the door, they'd practically fly at your face. I was their lone protector - so they stayed and every year a pair nested in that cavity. But their nest was right outside my office so I heard them ALL day 😂 7y
Tsubame @LauraBeth Awesome 😁 We have a nest at school every year and luckily everyone is super happy about that, because here in Japan swallows are very auspicious and will make your business prosper 🍀Next time your coworkers are annoyed that might be a good word to throw in 😉 7y
BookHermit I love swallows. A pair built a nest near our bedroom window once. They would dive bomb everyone who walked by. Everyone had to run past our house or face a scene from a kinder, gentler The Birds. 7y

Wikipedia says: "Cursive, is any style of penmanship in which some characters are written joined together in a flowing manner, generally for the purpose of making writing faster."
So this letter suits the definition ? I almost cant believe that I seriously don't own a single book with the title written in #cursive – sorry, but just slightly bent doesn't count here for me! #FallintoBooks

PurpleyPumpkin Isn't it odd? So few titles are written in cursive. I really found this prompt challenging. 7y

This book made me realize a lot of interesting things, such as my favoritism for tales of friendship and strong females, people taking their life in their own hands and being truly the ones making decisions. I also learnt that sci-fi is not my cup of tea and that I can't make myself read horror at all 🙈
So many feels in this most wonderful book, a must-read I think!

Luckily I got reminded that it's time for another #litsypartyofone 😊This morning none of the books I'm currently reading appealed to me, so I looked through my shelves and immediately picked this gem. Every time I reread it, I'm left heavily bookhungover and it suits my mood perfectly right now.
Finally summer is over and autumn has come!

Mommamanzi I'm about 60% into reading it. Totally not what I was expecting but am in love with it regardless! 7y
Tsubame @Mommamanzi Glad to hear that! What were you expecting? 7y
Mommamanzi I was NOT expecting a love story esp not thy type that it is (not that I dislike it). I named my daughter Penelope because of my love for The Odyssey, so I guess I was thinking something more along the lines of that. But I guess that's what I get for judging a book by its cover. Just glad I chose it! 7y

Tsubame @Mommamanzi LOL! Yes, I guess lovers of the Iliad wouldn't be too much into it, especially of the way Achilles is seen in this book, but it's so much more than just a love story and that's one of the aspects I love about the Song of Achilles. Can't wait to go and meet Chiron again!! Those scenes truly struck a chord with me. 7y

Gold edges anyone? This book really deserves them, so I tried coloring the edges again using watercolor, since that worked perfectly last time. After coloring and letting it dry the edges were perfectly smooth and shiny, until I opened it and then the gold started to come off. At first I was not happy, but then I brushed off all the excess and now I think that this faded effect suits the book so much more! ♥️

elkeOriginal Love it! And you are right - it deserves gilded edges 👏🏻👏🏻 7y

Tsubame @I-read-and-eat Yes, I am also a bit worried when I get down to it, but at the same time I think to myself that my books are also a mirror of myself and life is full of trial and error and if something should go wrong I'll try to find a creative solution to fix it – like I did when the color came partly off today 😁I wouldn't endeavor a project that could really damage a book beyond repair. 7y

Current read on my commute to/from work. What really puts me off so far is that I can't feel England at all in this book, but I also can't hold that against Ishiguro because that is obviously not his focus. It took me a bit to get into it, because the world building at the very beginning seems a little too forced and the exotic names too artificially constructed, yet after two thirds I feared to experience a bookhungover of the worst kind. Instead I was given a cliffhanger of the worst kind and if there's one thing I truly despise it's cliffhangers.
Continued in the comments.

Tsubame Oh man, there was such beautiful potential and even more beautiful moments in the book that I just LOVED, and one of the big mysteries gets and answer and in the end I do want to know more, but cliffhangers are the worst and poorest tool an author can make use of to me. It's like they're begging you to please please buy more of their books. If the story and writing are good then readers will do that without having to beg them to. At the end of a 7y
Tsubame book I want answers, not a plead! I want to be filled with awe and astonishment and I don't mind if not all ties are closed, but a good author - in my opinion - is able to leave and ending open with a feeling of satisfaction and that is ALWAYS ruined when there's a cliffhanger. Aaahhhh my teeth are so set on edge, because I wanted to love this book so badly and now I really don't 💀 7y
