A Time For New Dreams
A Time For New Dreams | Ben Okri
4 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
Booker Prize-winning novelist and one of Britain's foremost poets, Ben Okri is a passionate advocate of the written word. In A Time for New Dreams he breaks new ground in an unusual collection of linked essays, which address such diverse themes as childhood, self-censorship, the role of beauty, the importance of education and the real significance of the recent economic meltdown. Proving that 'true literature tears up the script' of how we see ourselves, A Time for New Dreams is provocative and thought-provoking. In an intriguing marriage of style and content, the concise but perfectly formed essays in this collection push the parameters of writing whilst asking profound questions about who we are and the future that awaits us.

When I was #26 I moved to Edinburgh and experienced edbookfest for the first time. It was 2012, the 50th anniversary of the infamous Edinburgh World Writers' Conference in 1962. Impassioned, provocative, insightful, it was a brilliant programme. #twentysix #novemberbythenumbers

Andrew65 Scotland has such a strong tradition of great writers, many of my favourite series or books are written by Scottish authors or set in Scotland or both! 7y
scripturient So many pics of China Mieville. *swoon* 😊 (edited) 7y

I've posted this before but my favourite #signed books are by Ben Okri, he's a hugely generous author and his inscriptions are always beautiful. This is from 2011 when I was still teaching. #ReadJanuary

I'm plugging Ben Okri again but this is where I turn when the world isn't making sense. From the English riots in 2011 to the ongoing awfulness of 2016. Inside he wrote "Best wishes for a rich and compassionate life: stay joyful". He's right. We're #overthis, the bigotry, the prejudice, fight it and #stayjoyful.

charl08 I love that cover. I'd add reading Woke Soyinka's work - politically brave man, as well as a great writer. 8y
Moray_Reads @charl08 I've never read anything by him. To the library catalogue! 8y
charl08 Should be 'Wole': sorry! Try the prison diaries if you can. 8y

My books this week (plus Number9Dream by David Mitchell). All new except Been Okri to whom I like to turn for reason and poetry. A Time for New Dreams and Solar Bones as the picks of the week.

#books #week42

Libby1 I was floored by Beatrice and Virgil. I thought it was profound. 8y
Moray_Reads @Libby1 I read Life of Pi when it was published (was that really 15 years ago?!) and loved it, for some reason B&V didn't work as well for me 8y
Libby1 @Moray_Reads - I think most people felt as you do! I actually liked it better than Life of Pi. I'm a little weird that way. 😛 8y
