Lighthouse Island
Lighthouse Island | Paulette Jiles
4 posts | 1 read | 10 to read
Paulette Jiles, thebestselling author of the highly praised novels The Color of Lightning, Stormy Weather, and Enemy Women, pushes into new territory with Lighthouse Island acaptivating and atmospheric story set in the far future a literary dystopian tale resonant with love and hope.In the coming centuries the world's population has exploded. The earth is crowded with cities, animals are nearly all extinct, and drought is so widespread that water is rationed. There are no maps, no borders, no numbered years, and no freedom, except for an elite few.It is a harsh world for an orphan like Nadia Stepan. Growing up, she dreams of a green vacation spot called Lighthouse Island, in a place called the Pacific Northwest. When an opportunity for escape arises, Nadia embarks on a dangerous and sometimes comic adventure. Along the way she meets a man who changes the course of her life: James Orotov, a mapmaker and demolition expert. Together, they evade arrest and head north toward a place of wild beauty that lies beyond the megapolis Lighthouse Island."

I‘m just over here trying to read and this goof keeps finding tennis balls in the backyard.
I‘m super excited to read another Paulette Jiles, News of the World was my favorite book I read last year!

Pickpick

If the characters in The Road had library cards, they'd fit right in here. The main character, an orphan, grows up reading classics that give her a sense of purpose in an Orwellian, drought-choked society where people are executed on live TV for entertainment. We follow her attempt to escape the urban wasteland & reach the mythical Lighthouse Island, but it was more (for me) about the power of words to save us in the darkest times. #jilesbacklist

Jas16 Great review! 8y
rubyslippersreads Lovely copy of GWTW. 😍😍😍 8y
LectricSheep @Jas16 Thank you! @rubyslippersreads Thanks! I found it at a used book store for under ten bucks in really good condition. It even has a little box it slides into. 😍 I've never read it though-- I have my tattered mass market paperback for that. 😆 it's too pretty to read! 8y

rubyslippersreads @LectricSheep I have my mom's pretty copy, but I only read GWTW on my iPad! 😄 8y
Nute I had no inkling that this was the synopsis for this book. Its such a different direction as far as plot line type for Paulette Jiles. Good for her. Definitely intrigued to read. 8y
LectricSheep @nute this is only my second book of hers-- I bought as much of her backlist as I could find after reading News of the World and realizing I'd never even heard of her before. The two novels actually seem surprisingly similar-- two characters on a journey through an inhospitable land. I'm looking forward to reading more of her! Do you have a favorite of hers? 8y

#marchintoreading day 7: #lighthouses

I didn't know there were that many interesting books with "lighthouse" in their titles and their covers! Some of them are nonfiction and children's books.

Have you read any of these?

christineandbooks I haven't read any of those but am particularly intrigued by the one you've tagged by Paulette Jiles.I recently read News of the World by her. This one sounds very different and really interesting! 8y
ApoptyGina69 I read Lighthousekeeping by Jeanette Winterson. I try to read all of her work. It was a solid "like", but not my favorite of hers. 8y
CocoReads @christineandbooks We tried Lighthouse Island for book group. It was universally despised, which made for an interesting discussion. Although I DNF'd it. I did like News of the World though. 8y
christineandbooks @CocoReads Good to know! 8y
slategreyskies @ApoptyGina69 I try to read everything by Jeanette Winterson too. ❤️ 8y
