We the Animals | Justin Torres
post image
Pickpick

Three boys with wild rambunctious energy employing all survivalist skills to outlast their childhood in a home where the parents are consumed by that crazy dangerous messed-up kind of love that makes childhood feel like something to hurry up and get over with, but in this home, family unity and the strength of brotherhood has a precedence and is expected to outweigh or hoped that it can outweigh all of the chaos contained in this family.👇🏽

Nute I like and hate stories like this where I spend my emotional energy just mad at the parents. Why did I stay in the story? It‘s a brief novel for one thing and Justin Torres is a gifted writer. And I wanted to see how the youngest son worked out his narrative.👇🏽 23h
Nute It‘s really his self-discovery story and his moment of bravery to stand before this intense family with the truth of who he is and how he needs to be seen by them and the level of acceptance that we display when we call ourselves FAMILY. Highly recommended! 23h
squirrelbrain Sounds like a good one - if rather frustrating. Great review though! 23h

The original thought was ‘there isn‘t enough time,‘ but then it is The Hobbit. The next thought was ‘I have a lot of other books to finish before the end of the year,‘ but then it is The Hobbit. The last thought was ‘It is one of my favorite books from childhood and because of that I‘ve read it more than once,‘ but oh my...IT IS THE HOBBIT!
I‘m all in for the buddy read 👉🏽 #ThereAndBackAgain and hanging out with #FellowshipOfTolkien...Yay!

akaGingerK Oh, this was my favorite book as a kid- and still up there now. December is super busy, but maybe I‘ll make time to join the adventure as well! 1w

JazzFeathers Welcome to the buddy read @Nute So happy to have you 😁 I don't mean to scare you, but that's axactly what l thought two years ago when l joined the #LotRChapterADay readalong. I don't have time, but... Two years later, l'm still reading chapters from Tolkien almost every day with my fellow #FellowshipOfTolkien ladies. This has been indeed the awesomest of journeys. 1w

Well this is happening because every family member, friend and acquaintance that I have who are in possession of my phone number either called or texted me to tell me that it is on television tonight. They know what‘s up and how I love this movie. I can watch it every night of the holiday season and never tire of it. It‘s so touching, reaffirming & good feeling that you can‘t help but smile at the end and run around looking for bells to ring!🛎🔔

#GratefulReads - Black In the Title: Once I had seen the movie, I didn‘t think about coming back to the book. I don‘t know why? I think that I felt satisfied with knowing this story. Litsy has changed my mind... now I would like to dig a little deeper so maybe this will be a selection for October 2020 reading.

#GratefulReads - Preferred Format: Paper, printed pages - vulnerable to water, sand, Cheetos-stained fingers and fire...you guessed it, regular books! Regular books - is that an appropriate description? Hmm...paper books - words inked on paper. Books that are heavy and cumbersome to carry around day-to-day. Books that challenge one‘s decision-making acuity when trying to choose just one or two to take on vacation.👇🏽

I like this day for its simple underlying reminder to be thankful every day for what you have been given & the duty of us all to pay-forward kindness, compassion, & generosity. #GratefulReads - Read in One Sitting: This was my introduction to Brandon Sanderson. I was knee-deep in fantasy books always searching for a fascinating magic world to fill the black hole void created by the conclusion of HP. I stumbled upon this beauty in a late night search of ebooks. It was the cover art that attracted my attention. It was the disbelief that BS wrote books under 500 pages that pulled at my curiosity.👇🏽

Nute Then it was this amazing perfectly written little story that held me captive and mesmerized me with its wonder and delight! 2w

#GratefulReads - Favorite Author: This is always a challenging prompt when trying to think of an absolute answer so I usually subcategorize it or link the answer to a certain place or time in my life history. After high school lit requirements, I came up in the reading ranks through fantasy, science fiction, legal thrillers, horror and then Michael Crichton who melded real life science with fictional encounters.👇🏽

Nute Yes, sometimes the fiction did strange things with the facts resulting in something too far fetched to even be made up and believable within the story, BUT he had fresh adventures and plausible messed-up fallout and satisfying endings. I haven‘t read him in awhile, but he is still on the list. 2w

#GratefulReads - Classic You Haven‘t Read: This book received a higher priority after The Great American Read list was made available to the public. It‘s a good thing that list made me take a closer look because what I thought I knew about this book is nothing like the actual plot overview. I don‘t know where I got my idea of the synopsis🤷🏽‍♀️ which had resulted in not wanting to read it, but I am interested now.

Lcsmcat Little Women is what made me read it. I wanted to know what Jo Beth Amy and Meg read. 2w

Nute @Lcsmcat I wonder if Little Women is where I first heard of this book? That same concept usually appeals to me...if a character is a heavy reader in a book or on a television show and mentions or list books then I want to read the same books too. However, for this book I had some screwed up idea about the plot and there was no intention to read it not until it was mentioned on GAR...now I‘m totally on board after reading the introduction to it.🙂 2w
Nute @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think how classic literature is approached (especially since it is usually introduced in high school) makes all the difference in enjoyment and then sustaining a committed desire to explore future and possibly harder reads. I know there is a classic book out there for you. I‘ll be so excited to hear about it when you make the discovery!🙂 2w
Lcsmcat @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It makes a difference if you think of classics as just stories that were so good lots of people loved them. 2w

I‘ve got the blues🥶 and not because of the extremely cold weather outside! I feel like something that had the potential to be brilliant is about to descend into a bunch of balderdash. I hope against all odds that she, the author, can turn this around. Either way the premise of this book - hushing women, placing constraints against women for being female, containing women, silencing the ideas of women, disregarding the intelligence of women - 👇🏽

Nute Christina Dalcher should have written a book that catches on fire 🔥 in the reader‘s hand and burns all ten fingers! 100 pages to go, I‘m holding out hope. I doubt there‘ll be a review afterwards, unless my girl, the author, does something spectacular in the end!!! (edited) 2w

Me | Elton John

I have many favorite songs by Elton John. Didn‘t everyone want to claim his music as their music? I remember one specific descriptive phrase for him back in the day...blue-eyed soul...he had that kind of vibe. He was rhythm & blues with some other kind of weird funky element thrown in. I played his music loud. Then I saw him on tv for the first time...I thought, well, he‘s different, but he owned his strange coolness and that was super groovy!👇🏽

Nute Now, I see his music in my son‘s playlist and I simply smile. This book was always going to happen!💝 2w

Nute @Eggs @Bklover @ChaoticMissAdventures Tons of memories flooded me while I was looking at this book in the bookstore. Then I had to play his music in the car on the drive home because, of course, every song of his popped into my head immediately after seeing his picture on the book cover. vivastory I'm due for an Agatha soon 3w
Nute @veritysalter @Scochrane26 I enjoy reading her novels so much that I don‘t want my time with her to end! I read only 1-2 books written by her per year and I follow each reading with watching the corresponding BBC video adaptation. That‘s fun! Some books I have read twice, but only because the first reading took place when I was a young teen and I had forgotten ‘whodunnit!‘😂 2w
Nute @lele1432 I do too! I hate calling them BLOOD oranges, but they taste so good no matter what they‘re called!😋 2w
Nute @vivastory Do you make a conscious effort to read her? I try to read at least 1-2 of her books yearly. I wanted to read her chronologically, but that didn‘t work out for some reason. I wanted to witness Hercule grow in his abilities and Miss Marple...well, Miss Marple just become more of Miss Marple!🙃 Are you almost through her entire collection? I‘m trying to enjoy her for as long as possible.🙂 2w
veritysalter Yes, I do a few a year. I‘ve done all the Poirot, Miss Marple and Partners in Crime. I‘m working my way through the stand alone mysteries - Parker Pyne Investigates is my next read. I plan to move on to Dorothy L Sayers next and the Collaborative Detection Club novels. What do you plan next? 💕 2w
Nute @veritysalter Right now I am going between Poirot and Miss Marple. I have decided to collect her books in the William Morrow editions so I read as I purchase. Your accomplishment thus far is magnificent! Since you have read so many, you might enjoy the podcast, All About Agatha, which does a breakdown analysis of her collection book by book. It‘s kind of amusing to listen to two people claiming to be Agatha Christie aficionados!🙂 2w

#GratefulReads - Book and Beverage: I still make a mad dash to the bookstore to get the books recommended by Oprah‘s Book Club. I think that she started something back in the 90s. ❄️ I haven‘t traveled out of the country since I was a teenager. I‘m willing to try any food source at least one time. I don‘t seem to need a lot of sleep.

#GratefulReads - Character You Love to Hate: Bellatrix Lestrange did the unthinkable thing and for that she is amongst first thoughts when listing story characters that have induced bitterness and agony. She was portrayed in the film by an actress that I really like, but that was no saving grace for this character. #PoetryMatters - Home: I don‘t remember how I found this poem. When you read poetry it comes to you from several different places. Whatever I was doing on the day of this discovery I was in the right place at the right time. It has the weight of an anthem & the urgency of a black & white truth. The poet wrote it while at a deportation center after visiting an abandoned Somali Embassy in Rome that had been turned into a home by some young refugees.

Nute ☝🏽 no one leaves home until home is a sweaty voice in your ear
saying —
leave,
run away from me now
i dont know what i‘ve become
but i know that anywhere
is safer than here👇🏽

TheSpineView This poem speaks volumes in just a small amount of verse! Excellent! 💜 3w
Nute @TheSpineView Agreed! It does speak volumes. It is an urgent beacon from the poet to the reader to look at the world and really see what has become of us and our home. Words serving as a warning...a signal. It is a reminder that once peace is disturbed in any home then the peace is disturbed on a universal level for all inhabitants of this place. A book about a bookstore: COOL
A book that mentions several other books: REALLY COOL
A book that spoils the plots of other books: NOT COOL
A book with two-dimensional characters: NO WAY COOL
A book with off-the-wall plausibility: MAY BE COOL BUT NEVER COULD BE COOL IF IT AIN‘T DONE COOL

Why did I read it? BECAUSE IT WAS ABOUT A BOOKSTORE and like I said THAT‘S ALWAYS COOL!😎

Nute @Bookishthoughts @Coleen_Nieto @emtobiasz @Hooked_on_books Happy to know that it‘s not just me, because my entire book club gave it the thumbs up and wondered if I‘d read the same book. I wasn‘t looking for depth, but I was looking for ‘something else‘ - a more fullness to the characters and story. It was too far fetched and flat. I wanted to care a lot more for a dying small town and its inhabitants! 4w

Nute @TheSpineView Thank you! There might be reasons that would cause you to enjoy this book. I did like the sentimentality related to the pull of a bookstore or library for a dedicated reader. I liked equating a great portion of happiness with reading. But after those points were made... Hmmm🤔 4w
lynneamch Yep. Having lived in Iowa for 30+ years, I found the audio version to be especially troublesome: the "aw, shucks" inaccurate accents emphasized the shallow stereotyped characterizations. A good premise gone awry. The letters held some interest for me. 3w

#GratefulReads - Under 250 Pages: Sometimes you forget a book. It hangs out in the back of a bookshelf or underneath a stack of much larger books or at the bottom of a bag of books until something (a photo prompt) sends you in its direction. #GratefulReads - Books Gifted to You: I‘ve never had a reading friend in my day-to-day life space. That‘s why I belong to several book clubs and put energy into Litsy. When one of my co-workers made a bookish comment one day, my heart skipped a beat! ‘OMG, are you a reader?‘ I gushed about books for the next several days and then I bought her a book. Guess what happened next? She bought me one back (the tagged book)! Be still my heart!

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Love Moriarty, haven't read this one yet though. 1mo
Megabooks @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego it‘s actually my favorite and I‘m not usually a romance person. 1mo
LiteraryinLititz Yay for a bookish friend IRL!! 1mo

Bookzombie What a great story! 🙂 1mo
Billypar I think about this a lot - how much of a niche hobby it's become. Now even if two readers read wildly different stuff, I feel like they have more in common than two people who watch the same tv shows. 1mo
Reggie This was a lovely post.❤️ 1mo
Crazeedi That is a wonderful story, so glad for you 1mo
Nute @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Megabooks I like her books. This one was a pleasant surprise due to the main character‘s occupation. I thought it was really interesting to do the story with hypnotherapy being thrown in the mix and also the fact that she thought her honey had props because he was “worthy” of having a stalker!😧This girl needed a best girlfriend! 4w
Nute @Hooked_on_books @OriginalCyn620 @Bookzombie @Reggie @Crazeedi Thank you! I‘m so grateful to have my Litsy friends to help fill the void of IRL reading companions!💕 4w
Nute @LiteraryinLititz Yes! She doesn‘t read a lot or even consistently, but when she is reading I am so grateful for her presence in my life. A bookish friend for me...even in the slightest degree - an overflowing heart!💕 4w
Nute @Billypar There is a deep connection at the ‘earthiness‘ of our being related to shared stories. I think that storytelling has always accomplished that. I can‘t imagine the immediate ease of conversation that we would have at our first meeting, Vinny, just because of calling ourselves ‘readers.‘🙂 4w
Megabooks That is a very good point re:stalker! She did need some friends! 4w

#Movember - Girl Gone Wild: I don‘t know if I‘m interested in this book, but I really like the cover. This book “celebrates the resilience of girls and the earthshaking power of their friendships.” It‘s also described as eerie - I don‘t know why? Hmm...I guess that I‘m interested now.

Megabooks I‘m interested too, but I‘ve heard it‘s gory. Kind of like a female lord of the flies. Hmmm... Nice choice! 1mo
Linsy Crazy cover! 💚 1mo
Nute @Megabooks Lord of the Flies with girl power, I just might be scared of that reality!😳 1mo
Nute @Linsy It‘s cool isn‘t it? I think that it might tie into the story...‘girl comes undone out there somewhere in the wilderness.‘ (edited) 1mo

#GratefulReads - Over 500 pages: The vibe I got from her...”Maybe, just maybe, if I don‘t look at it then we can both act like it‘s not even in the same room with us. A weekend morning can be as it should be - a non-rushed belly rub, special Sunday food, cuddles & kisses & a long walk in the early morning fresh air. But if she looks at this book...well, I know that some of those things won‘t happen in their one hundred 💯 percent capacity!”😡👇🏽

Scochrane26 😍🐕🥰 1mo
Nute That‘s the vibe that she was throwing my way!😩 Oh yeah, the photo prompt...This edition of Anna Karenina clocks in at 754 pages. I enjoyed every sentence of it. BTW...no shade on these Barnes and Nobles Classic editions. I actually really like the entire format of their editions including the notes and even the font selection which for some reason is very important to me when reading classic literature.🤓 1mo

#Movember - Music: I like when there is a prompt about music in the photo challenges because listening to music is equally as important to me as reading books. I usually do the two together. I have a playlist on my iPod titled ‘Music for Reading.‘🎶 Reading penetrates to some deeper part of my brain when I‘m listening to music simultaneously. Oliver Sacks understood - music wields a power over the brain. I say music communicates with the soul.🎵

Cinfhen That‘s so interesting/ when I read I can‘t have background music....I find my concentration is broken 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1mo
Nute @Cinfhen I get that! It‘s the same for why I can‘t read and have a television on in the background. And I can‘t read in places where there are conversations like waiting rooms or on public transportation. Here‘s the deal with the music thing - it must be at low volume and only a particular type of music like classical or new age or smooth jazz...no vocals...no upbeat tempo. I really like haunting cello music while I read. Oooh...just lovely!☺️ 1mo
Cinfhen Yes !!!!! to the public reading spaces and TV background/ so distracting!!! I‘ll try smooth jazz or new age. I find music is so soothing on any other circumstance 1mo

#GratefulReads - Preferred Genre: After children‘s literature, but before young adult literature. After Ramona, but before V.C. Andrews. After summer required reading, but possibly at the same time as Stephen King, a liking for science fiction and fantasy developed. There had already been The Hobbit and The Chronicles of Narnia and a magical transporting story about dragons. These books took reading to a whole other level. I had found a niche👇🏽

Nute that continues to grab at my attention with a full-strength gravitational pull to this very day. Oh, the tagged book: I read it a awhile back, and though the storyline escape me, I remember the feeling associated with reading it...that was fantastic! 1mo
Chrissyreadit This sounds like a good book but hard to find. 1mo
OriginalCyn620 🙌🏻📚❤️ 1mo
Nute @Chrissyreadit I was a much younger reader when I read it, and I have never reread it. I seldom reread books. That being said, I feel like I would still be amazed and happily satisfied with this story today. I really liked it and boy did it solidify my love for this genre.👍🏽 Oh yes, you are absolutely correct, it‘s hard to find - out of print and not available in digital or audio format. I wanted a second copy of it and couldn‘t find anything.🙁 1mo

It has been snowing off and on for the last three days. Today the office closed early so that hopefully everyone would get home safely. Though I should have driven straight home because the roads actually were icy and slippery, my car drove itself to the book store so that I could be happier tomorrow in the event of an office closure due to inclement weather. Look what came home with Mama! Yay, me!!

Nute @Eggbeater I couldn‘t wait to have in my possession, but I‘ll probably wait to read. I don‘t like to read trilogies or series until the entire set is complete & available. What are your thoughts on reading trilogies/series? The only time that I couldn‘t bare the anticipation & wait...Harry Potter! 1mo

I wish that I was enjoying this, but I‘m not feelin‘ it. It‘s possible that I‘m not being fair. His poetry flows like radio music. It feels like he is writing as a songwriter instead of as a poet whose poetry could shine inside a song lyric. I dare not say this because this man gave us the words to “Hallelujah,” a song that is breathtaking and beautiful. I‘m gonna stick this out to the end as a thank you to Leonard Cohen for that song.

I don‘t know how I feel about this book. The thing that was the “big thing” is what I found most challenging about the book - the reverse order. It was interesting to tell the events of a murder mystery by looking at it backwards, but there were times when I didn‘t know if I figured something out because I was intuitive or because I had already experienced the day after.🤷🏽‍♀️
👇🏽

Nute And then some scenes were never addressed in the past or in the present. I ended up reading it a second time, but backwards from back to front so that I could understand the forward motion. It‘s less than a ‘pick‘ but more than a ‘so-so‘ because it had to take mad skill to write it that way and because to me Tyler was all that!😜 (edited) 2mo

I ordered this book and now I have it in my possession. So...I guess there aren‘t any more excuses. I just need to get on with it. Gosh, look at all of those pages! I‘m filled with apprehension and possibly dread! I‘m trying desperately to hold on to the encouragement given from you, my dearest Littens, but those words are fading fast in the presence of this phenomenal encounter. So if I‘m not talking about this book, you know the reason why!😳

Nute @Billypar I‘ve read long books before. I‘ve never felt quite as anxious as this. Maybe I had more time and not so many responsibilities. Maybe I read more lightly without an in-depth search for meaning so the pace could be quick. I don‘t know what the maybe reason is, but I do like the thought of thinking that in the end I will probably find the story enjoyable!😊 2mo
Nute @Aimeesue Yes! Though he hangs out with me at work inspiring cheerfulness there!😜 2mo

Aimeesue @Nute I think he wants you to read it to him. 😂 Sometimes when I want to read a book that's resisting me (a lot of classics, tbh) I listen to an audio version WHILE I read. Some are pro - level quality, even@(Mil Nicholson's Dickens books are the best I've ever heard.) Good luck! 2mo
Nute @Aimeesue I have often followed a print read with a LibriVox audio presentation. Some audio narrations have been very good and others not as pleasing. But I might try what you are suggesting and listen while I read. I think that is an awesome idea. Thanks!💕 1mo

I was reminded of this book today here on Litsy! Suddenly I remembered the pressing urgency I had to read it. I am saddened by how often I say, “ I always wanted to read that book. It‘s been a Want-To-Read book for a very long time. Maybe one day soon now. I‘m moving it up on my reading list!” What are we to do as readers with so much good literature to get to & the weight of not enough time in every day? Sometimes I hate to think about it.👇🏽
