Homeward Bound: The Life of Paul Simon | Peter Ames Carlin
5 posts | 3 read | 15 to read
To have been alive during the last sixty years is to have lived with the music of Paul Simon. The boy from Queens scored his first hit record in 1957, just months after Elvis Presley ignited the rock era. As the songwriting half of Simon & Garfunkel, his work helped define the youth movement of the '60s. On his own in the '70s, Simon made radio-dominating hits. He kicked off the '80s by reuniting with Garfunkel to perform for half a million New Yorkers in Central Park. Five years later, Simon's album "Graceland" sold millions and spurred an international political controversy. And it doesn't stop there. The grandchild of Jewish immigrants from Hungary, the nearly 75-year-old singer-songwriter has not only sold more than 100 million records, won 15 Grammy awards and been installed into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame twice, but has also animated the meaning?and flexibility?of personal and cultural identity in a rapidly shrinking world. Simon has also lived one of the most vibrant lives of modern times; a story replete with tales of Carrie Fisher, Leonard Bernstein, Bob Dylan, Woody Allen, Shelley Duvall, Nelson Mandela, the Grateful Dead, drugs, depression, marriage, divorce, and more. A life story with the scope and power of an epic novel, Carlin's Homeward Bound is the first major biography of one of the most influential popular artists in American history.

thumbs up for me! big chunky book with lots of nitpicky details for the big fan. more about his music and creative process than personal details but still lots i didn't know. for example: one of my favorite songs, "Gone At Last," was originally a duet with Bette Midler (who he was dating at the time) but it didn't work out and when they broke up she was replaced by Phoebe Snow! #LRC18

MemoirsForMe Who knew about Bette and Phoebe! How interesting! 😊 7y
Aleida I heard he was a bit of a dick towards women. 7y
wonga @aledia not just women I think! he comes across as being sometimes difficult and insecure and all of his relationships seem complicated. (edited) 7y

#TBRtemptation post! Any Paul Simon and Simon & Garfunkel fans out there? From what I'm told, this is the best definitive biography of the iconic musician. It covers everything you'd want to know about the man and offers impressive glimpses into music's evolution and how the industry operates. My library received several requests for this book. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

monkeygirlsmama I've been a SandG fan since I was in middle school. Thanks! 8y
TrishB Hubby will love this - he's obsessed with music biographies! 8y
Suelizbeth I love Paul Simon! S and G were a fantastic duo, but Paul Simon was even better as a solo. 8y

Cortg A neighbor in high school cut a Charlie Brown tree down and we decorated it with S & G stuff...we laughed and said it was our S & G Christmas that year. Good memories! I'll have to check this book out. Thanks! 8y
