“Do you think everybody misses somebody? Like I miss my mama?” “Mmmm-hmmm,” said Gloria. She closed her eyes. “I believe, sometimes, that the whole world has an aching heart.”

I would use this book to talk to my students about emotions. While observing in my previous and current classroom placements, I have noticed emotional regulation is one of the biggest challenges I see students struggling with. I would also use this to educate students about overcoming challenges.
Contemporary Realistic Fiction- Because of Winn-Dixie is a great choice for this genre of children books. I think everyone should read this book. The main character overcomes many hardships and challenges. This book could be used to educate students about talking about emotions and common challenges one may face.

“You can‘t always judge people by the things they‘ve done. You got to judge them by what they are doing now.”
This book shows that friendship and kindness can help heal emotional wounds and bring people together. It shows how love and understanding can build connections and make life better, even in difficult times.
Because of Winn-Dixie is a heartwarming story about a young girl named Opal who after moving to a new town, adopts a stray dog named Winn-Dixie. The dog helps her make friends and mend her relationship with her father. Through Winn-Dixie, Opal learns about love, forgiveness, and the importance of community.
A simple book about the healing qualities of a dog that comes into the life of a lonely child.
Such a heartwarming story about a girl and a dog. I can‘t believe I haven‘t read this before now. Narration by Cherry Jones is excellent.

A motherless girl and adopted dog find friendship in small town Florida. We own many DiCamillo books but this may be my favourite, perhaps as we are currently caring for a large, smelly, old lab who also smiles with all his teeth. The cast of characters is wonderful. Trix believes books pose a problem, then solve it - of course the mother would return - but was content when Opal‘s loneliness was assuaged by her new friendships.

My last post, It's been a great March. I didn't read all the books I planed, but I read quite a few.
5⭐ A Single Shard 12th century Korea.
Another orphan story I loved.
4.5⭐ Because of Winn-Dixie
What's better than a book about an orphaned kid? an orphaned dog. A great story of how Winn-Dixie helps Opal make friends in a new town.
4 ⭐ The Storm in the Barn 1937
Enjoyable graphic novel of dust bowl Kansas.
This Newbery award winning novel follows the story about a girl and her dog, Winn-Dixie. This modern fantasy story would make for a great author‘s study on beloved storyteller Kate Dicamillo. UDL principles 2.4 and 3.1. ESOL strategies #4 and #29. #ucflae3414sp21
This Rf, Newberry award winner is a classic story that I would recommend to everyone. The story is about a young girl in Florida who adopts a dog who ends up having a huge impact on her life. This book could be a great source for an independent read. Students could take notes on each chapter to create an overall summary that they can look back on after they finish the book.
Why haven‘t I read this sweet, sad story before?! I don‘t like dogs, so maybe that held me back. But this was exactly what I needed. Go read this book; I‘ll wait.
Finally got a #bookspinbingo , and my screen-induced headache has eased a bit. Hooray for MG-sized print!

I‘ve been working on Lies My Teacher Told Me, but I have to do it in spurts because it‘s an ebook and the screen is hard on my eyes. I finished the chapter Gone With the Wind, about history textbooks making racism invisible. Then I turned to the tagged book to relieve my eye strain, and here we have a librarian recommending Gone With the Wind. Interesting.
Such a beautiful, heartwarming book. I read it first as a kid and it has always stayed with me. Glad I decided to revisit this one.
My podcast is back from a brief holiday break — and on the first episode of 2021, my guest and i are chatting about Because of Winn-Dixie! We chat about the book‘s colorful cast of characters, charming setting, and general sweetness. We talk about pet personalities and i gush about my dog. We discuss the book‘s focus on empathy and the moments we felt the empathy may have gone too far (bear with us!). 🎧🐶 Link to listen in my bio!
One of our favorites! A feel good story - great for reading to kids. Mine are age 5 and 7.

Review:
This was my 2nd time reading this book. Last time I read it I was 13 and received it as a Christmas gift from my Grandparents and thought it was a sweet story about a girl and a stray fog she found at a grocery store, I still love this book!!
After 17 years I still wanna read more by this author!!
Starting Book 7 of August and Book 116 of 2020!!!
5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Why did I wait so long to read this book. What a simple but beautifully heartfelt story of a little girl and her dog. I also love how this shows that friendship has no age limit. Everyone needs a friend. Sometimes we just have to open our hearts.
Opal is one of my favorite characters. I love that she is always herself and not pretending to be something she isn't.
This Newberry award winner will win over your heart. Opal was abandoned by her mother and is now living in Florida with her father. She finds a hyper dog and befriends him right away. The two meet very interesting people throughout the town and realize the value of a community. This is an absolutely wonderful book! Loved it! #UCFLAE3414SP20
This RF Novel by the one and only Kate Dicamello is my absolute favorite. I forgot how good of a book this was. It tells the story of a girl and her interesting partner a dog that teaches her the importance of friendship & forgiveness. This is perfect for an AS as Dicamello is the author of many wonderful books. she provides downloadable teacher resources and lesson plans to go along with her book.
