A motherless girl and adopted dog find friendship in small town Florida. We own many DiCamillo books but this may be my favourite, perhaps as we are currently caring for a large, smelly, old lab who also smiles with all his teeth. The cast of characters is wonderful. Trix believes books pose a problem, then solve it - of course the mother would return - but was content when Opal‘s loneliness was assuaged by her new friendships.

My last post, It's been a great March. I didn't read all the books I planed, but I read quite a few.

5⭐ A Single Shard 12th century Korea.
Another orphan story I loved.

4.5⭐ Because of Winn-Dixie
What's better than a book about an orphaned kid? an orphaned dog. A great story of how Winn-Dixie helps Opal make friends in a new town.

4 ⭐ The Storm in the Barn 1937
Enjoyable graphic novel of dust bowl Kansas.

This Rf, Newberry award winner is a classic story that I would recommend to everyone. The story is about a young girl in Florida who adopts a dog who ends up having a huge impact on her life. This book could be a great source for an independent read. Students could take notes on each chapter to create an overall summary that they can look back on after they finish the book.

Emiranda https://www.readingrockets.org/news/digital-note-taking-strategies-deepen-studen... EL 9 is used in this strategy as the students are being exposed to new note taking strategies. UDL 1.1 is being offered as they are given choices to pick new note taking strategies 3y

Why haven‘t I read this sweet, sad story before?! I don‘t like dogs, so maybe that held me back. But this was exactly what I needed. Go read this book; I‘ll wait.

I‘ve been working on Lies My Teacher Told Me, but I have to do it in spurts because it‘s an ebook and the screen is hard on my eyes. I finished the chapter Gone With the Wind, about history textbooks making racism invisible. Then I turned to the tagged book to relieve my eye strain, and here we have a librarian recommending Gone With the Wind. Interesting.

Back in my third-grade classroom, I was assigned to read this book. Over 10 years have passed and I am reading this book once again for my college class. This is a story of a girl that befriends a stray dog after moving to a new town. this story is relatable to many children that move to a new town and are scared because they are leaving the old friends and life behind. This book deals with some more serious topics but it is still kept friendly.

The outstanding RF N, Because of Winn Dixie, written by Kate DiCamillo is a great LC book for your 3-8th grade students. This book is a Newbery Medal award winner. Follow the journey of Opal and her father as they move to Florida. Opal goes into the store “Winn Dixie“ and comes out with a dog! Opal and Winn Dixie become the best of friends. Follow both of them on an unforgettable, heart-breaking journey. #UCFLAE3414F19

Camrynm The EL strategy I would use would be 42: Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information. This can be a long novel for a 3rd grader so it is important to have them sequence the events in chronological order. The UDL principle I would use would be 3.3: Guide information processing and visualization. After students read the book, they can watch the incredible movie! 4y

This book can relate to any children even when the book talks about bullying and the children at her school/church.

I think this book portrays how some children's lives are while also illuminating the issues with growing up in the world today. The main character, Opal, just moves to a new town where it is hard for her to make friends. Opal also lives with only her father since her mother left them when she was younger. This can be a rough topic for some children, but this book can help children dealing with similar lifestyles and issues.

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Dicamillo is a great choice for a LC. This RF is a Newbery Honor and about a girl named Opal and her father moving to a small town in Florida. Opal misses her old life and isn't having fun when she runs into a stray dog in a Winn-Dixie grocery store. They quickly fall in love with each other and Opal even makes new friends. Kate DiCamillo truly pulls no punches. While the story features a ten-year-old protagonist & is written for an audience of the same age, it touches upon issues such as: loneliness, grief, single parenthood, alcoholism, racism, sexism, ageism, & imprisonment. It‘s easy to become distracted by the cuteness of the titular puppy & forget the vulnerability, hollowness, & hope at the book‘s core. Don‘t forget. It‘s everything. Well done, K.D.! 👏🏻

This RF book has won the Newbery award and one of Kate DiCamillo‘s popular novels! This book is one that students can relate to, most everyone has been around a dog or has been attached to an animal. Also, it shows that it is alright to be sad and there are many more things in your life that can make you happy. I would have students do a partner read and talk about their feelings of the book and how it can be relatable. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Macker11 The students can relate India Opal‘s life to their own in UDL #3.1 and ESOL #17 to where they can use context clues in order to relate this text to real world scenarios. http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/lesson_images/lesson101/Elementsof... this is a good graphic organizer for them to put down feelings and make it easier to relate to different problems India Opal faces. 5y

Kate DiCamillo's realistic fiction (RF) novel "Because of Winn-Dixie" is a relatable story that has the ability to tug at everyone's heartstrings! I have used this story while completing an author's study (AS), which I will link below.
"Because of Winn-Dixie" is a story about a young girl named Opal who moves to Florida with her father, the preacher. Opal eventually attaches herself to a dog she found at a Winn-Dixie grocery store, ultimately

caldwellalex95 bringing the dog home and naming it Winn-Dixie. Throughout the novel, Opal and Winn-Dixie meet the citizens of Naomi, Florida; these experiences gradually cause Opal to gain a new, fresh outlook on life and help her truly understand what it means to be grateful and to let go. I created an author's study on Kate DiCamillo and included a link to a "Because of Winn-Dixie" lesson plan on the last slide, titled "Kate DiCamillo Resources". This lesson 5y
caldwellalex95 plan surrounds a scrapbooking activity, which will engage students as they incorporate their own creativity into their individual assignment. ESOL strategy #30 and UDL's expression and communication strategy (5.1) can be used for this scrapbooking lesson plan, provided by Scholastic. "Because of Winn-Dixie" is a story that anyone can relate to. This novel is the first book I have ever read from Kate DiCamillo, and it has touched my heart forever! 5y
