Acclaimed manga artist Jiro Taniguchi provides the latest entry in the Louvre collection of graphic novels. After a group trip to Europe, a Japanese artist stops in Paris alone, intent on visiting the museums of the capital. But, bedridden in his hotel room with fever, he faces the absolute solitude of one suffering in a foreign land, deprived of any immediate or familiar recourse. When the fever breaks somewhat, he sets out on his visit and promptly gets lost in the crowded halls of the Louvre. Very soon, he discovers many unsuspected facets to this world in a museum in a journey oscillating between feverish hallucination and reality, actually able to speak with famous painters from various periods of history, led to crossroads between human and personal history by... the Guardians of the Louvre.

A thoroughly gorgeous work of art. I loved seeing all of the illustrations of the Louvre and its art as the main character made his way through art history, especially exploring Japanese art history. I learned quite a bit from this book, including that the Louvre's art was evacuated ahead of the Nazi invasion of France. #Art #History #Manga

Part of a series of graphic novels commissioned by the Louvre, this manga tells the tale of a Japanese artist visiting Paris who enters the feverish dream-space where art & his unconscious mind meet. The episodic nature of the book highlights individual artists displayed in the Louvre, & the chapters cover the Japanese links to Camille Corot & Van Gogh, for example, while another deals with the transportation+preservation of artwork ahead of WWII.

batsy Although there is not much in the way of a plot, & the narrative arc itself can be a bit cheesy or sentimental, the art in this manga is gorgeous & something about the pace of the book is calming & nourishing. It was exactly the kind of book I wanted to lose myself in over the weekend. It has some pretty traditional views about art, but even within that sentiment there's a lot that can be true & beautiful, depending on your mood. I enjoyed it. 2y

I am going to Paris this summer, and I wanted to read this book to help me remember what the louvre is like and prepare me to see the museum through my adult eyes. This book was not as interesting as I thought it would be. I wanted more background on the paintings and to learn more about the museum. The art is fabulous, so that was a plus.

TricksyTails With that adorable face, I‘d be too distracted to read anyway! 😍🐶♥️ 6y

This gives you some of the interiors showcasing the Louvre. The idea is every painting or sculpture or item in the museum has a soul or inner story to tell. The artist learned to tap into the souls with his visits. #readathon

Jiro Taniguchi is one of my favorite manga artists. Such clean lines and yet still a dreamy quality about his storytelling. We get a tour of the Louvre when an artist finds a space between dream and reality. The Van Gogh section gave me Doctor Who feels, but I loved the Japanese painter learning from the beauty of a French landscape. #readathon
