Awareness
Awareness: Conversations with the Masters | Anthony De Mello
6 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
"This is your wake-up call! You may not have even realized you were sleep-walking. Most of us are most of the time. Awareness is an eye-opener. It's Anthony de Mello telling you gently but firmly, 'It's time to get up now.'" --Charles Osgood of "CBS Sunday Morning" and "The Osgood File" "Awareness will be the critical test of American business in the next decade. I call it the 'business of awareness.'" --F.X. Maguire, Hearth Communications Group The heart of Anthony de Mello's bestselling spiritual message is awareness. Mixing Christian spirituality, Buddhist parables, Hindu breathing exercises, and psychological insight, de Mello's words of hope come together in Awareness in a grand synthesis. In short chapters for reading in quiet moments at home or at the office, he cajoles and challenges: We must leave this go-go-go world of illusion and become aware. And this only happens, he insists, by becoming alive to the needs and potential of others, whether at home or in the workplace. Here, then, is a masterful book of the spirit, challenging us to wake up in every aspect of our lives.

It's like zen but the asshole view. It was published in 1990 and has all of the "tough love", "I'm just being honest", self-improvement on cocaine attitude you might expect. There‘s lots of content that hasn‘t aged well (a couple of slurs, lots of ableism) and way too many stories, quips, and parables. I agree with de Mello‘s overall message of not being dependent on people or things for happiness, but this isn‘t the book that‘ll get you there.

This book has some great thoughts, but some are a bit extreme.

#rocktober #knowyourenemy @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Im going with the enemy within. Freud spoke of the "super ego" & more recently we speak of " the inner critic"
Anthony de Mello's book Awareness is so helpful, because awareness is the key to understanding & to knowing that enemy within us. & we can stop listening to that enemy voice within & develop a kinder voice. A lifetimes work ❤️pic of kindle and cup in the dark

The author was an Indian Jesuit priest and psychotherapist, who wrote in a style that was modern and unconventional, laced with folk tales and a sense of humor. Lots to think about!
