Well, here it is, Labor Day. I completed 13 of my #14Books14Weeks2021 stack, having skipped The Children of the New Forest. I‘ll get to it, eventually, I do want to read it, but it just keeps getting bumped. I read tons of other books this summer, though! Thanks for hosting @TheHeartlandBookFairy - always a good challenge.

Ruthiella Well done! 👏👏👏 3y

I‘m behind on my buddy read, but hope to finish it the weekend so I can start the next one.

Great quote!

This took me a bit to get into then it was engrossing. The language reminded me of all the Shakespeare about Richard III books I read this month. I‘m not sure kids would enjoy it in todays school setting but I can see it as a read aloud with great discussion. This is considered a living book in classical learning curriculum. I enjoyed the read!

tpixie I still have a bit to read. It‘s been a great read. I agree, I think kids might need a read along and some adult guidance to help them with this book. But it is great how the kids survived out there on their own! I remember reading my side of the mountain as a child and thought how exciting it would be to be in the wilderness Surviving on my own! 3y
TheBookHippie @tpixie Oh I remember reading that as a child! I was fascinated as well!! 3y

UwannaPublishme I finished this book today. Yay! I must admit, I was tempted to DNF when I first started. It slogged a bit. But I forged ahead and simply fell in love with these kids and their resilience. Thank you again @TheBookHippie for introducing me to another memorable classic. The language made my head turn a few times and the last paragraph was a hoot! 3y
ravenlee I haven‘t even started it. I overcommitted this month and got overwhelmed. I am looking forward to it when I can get to it, though. 3y
TheBookHippie @UwannaPublishme I agree it took a bit, but THEN, it is oooo so good!!!! Considering when it was written I think it held up so well, I am going to try it as a read aloud. I think it's fun to imagine trying to survive as kids in the woods in the 'olden' days. Plus kids today have no clue about anything we read in this book. I too am glad I found it. It was a good month. 3y
TheBookHippie @ravenlee I've been there. I over commit reading often!! HA. Post Menopause insomnia saves me! AS for this book-This was surprisingly really good. As some of us have said it takes a bit to get into it and then it's really really good. Some of the language is really old so it takes a minute. I found it fascinating. 3y
PurpleyPumpkin I, too, am behind with reading this book! But I‘ll be reading it tomorrow and hope to catch up. While I‘m not that far into it, I‘m enjoying it so far. Thanks for selecting it for this month‘s book. I might never have come across it otherwise!☺️ (edited) 3y
TheBookHippie @PurpleyPumpkin It‘s quite lovely I think 🤍 3y
UwannaPublishme So true! Today‘s kids would never believe they survived without an iPhone! 😉 3y

I read this book for the first time. But surprisingly the story felt familiar to me. As I progress I remembered reading the translated version of this book as a kid. I read it in my mother tongue Kannada language ( one of the Indian languages ) It used to be my father‘s text book during his school days 😛 oh I felt thrilled ! I am happy to read the same book now. Thank you very much @TheBookHippie for #childrensclassicread2021

TheBookHippie Oh how wonderful !!! What a gift!!!! I‘m reading a chapter a day with my coffee in the morning and loving it! 3y

tpixie Thx! 3y
tpixie The conversational dialogue of the time is so fun to read. They talk so differently than we do – especially our children! 3y
TheBookHippie @tpixie I‘m enjoying my mornings with it so very much. Charming it is! 3y

YA books have come a long way since this book was written!
One fun part:
I‘m enjoying when the narrator gives us background info, and then says, ‘ Now let‘s get back to the story‘!
I have always liked it when narrators talk to me!

Coffee dripping in the pour over this book on tap to start today, it‘s JUNE!

Hoping this is a good one.

The Children of the New Forest was one of the first historical novels written for a young audience, and the first such novel which has endured. It was particularly successful in fixing the image of the English Civil War as a quarrel of opposites, with dour Roundheads versus swashbuckling Cavaliers.

Everyone welcome

TheBookHippie FYI 1847 this was written so we may come across things that are not said or done today 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y

JUNE #CHILDRENSCLASSICREAD2021

“This is the first enduring historical novel for children, which conjures up as much magic today as it did on first publication.”

That‘s what made me pick this read! I can‘t wait to see what it‘s like. Adventure awaits for June coffee mornings 🤞🏻

I found this is free for kindle unlimited or 99 cents here in the US. I also found it on hoopla. I ordered a used copy that should arrive soon.

Everyone welcome!

tpixie 🥳🥳🥳 3y
PurpleyPumpkin Thanks for the heads up about the Kindle option. I‘ve downloaded it!👍🏽 3y
UwannaPublishme Yay! Just ordered my copy! 🙌🏻 3y
