The past comes back to haunt game warden Joe Pickett and his family with devastating effect in the thrilling new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author. The plane circled in the dark. Joe Pickett could just make out down below a figure in the snow and timber, and then three other figures closing in. There was nothing he could do about it. And Joe knew that he might be their next target. The Cates family had always been a bad lot. Game warden Joe Pickett had been able to strike a fierce blow against them when the life of his daughter April had been endangered, but he d always wondered if there d be a day of reckoning. He s not wondering any longer. Joe knows they re coming after him and his family now. He has his friend Nate by his side, but will that be enough this time? All he can do is prepare . . . and wait for them to make the first move."

Finished this in my PJ‘s with my dog and my coffee #perfection

This is my favorite series because of Joe Pickett‘s bumbly honest nature, his penchant for finding himself in danger, and the love he has for his family. The case he works here has been ongoing for the past several books and it was nice to see it come to a close. Maybe. CJ Box has a knack for really setting up the scenes and painting Wyoming and the Tetons beautifully with words.

Another good one from CJ Box. Hard to describe each one but they are what they are. I enjoy them and will read through the rest of the series.

After reading the latest in the Joe Pickett series, I looked back through the series and realized I missed this one. Now a few things make sense! I always love these books and can‘t wait for the next one. Now I‘m really caught up!

I‘ve been reading on Kindle this past month so it was great to hold a book in my hands and riffle the pages; nothing like it. I wanted to like this; all the elements, the theme is good, and with characters who could have been compelling. But somehow felt it could have gone much deeper and darker.

My first C. J. Box read. I found it slow to get into but the story got more involved in the later chapters. It could have become a DNF on my list except it was the book club pick for next week's meeting. I may try other C.J. Box books, but doubt they will become must reads for me.

Chelleo They are a slow build but I like his storytelling. I love the audio version...maybe that'll help? 7y
KellyK @Chelleo I think it would have helped if I would have known some of the background. That always happens when I start in the middle of a series and I know better than to do that! 🤔 7y
Chelleo @KellyK True. I started in the middle too and decided to start the series from the beginning. It did help because he builds on on each book. 7y

Had never thought of this. Makes perfect sense. Reading CJ Box, I'm always learning stuff.

Gina Hahahaha that is fantastic! So the question stands... who skills work best to help you survive? I am thinking when the Zombies apocalypse happens the river is the better choice. 8y

This series is pure fun for me. The setting is a ax much a character as the people, there is development of the characters throughout the series, and the pacing and plotting are solid.
