so-soThere are valid concerns about Lovecraft's personal views. Speaking only of the short story (and it is very short), it's a fairly straightforward horror tale. Literary critics will place it in different genres and point to psychological themes exemplified in the work. All true, but for a casual reader or someone trying to get through HPL as one of the classics of sci-fi/fantasy, it's worth a read for sake of completion.

pickA very short story and a good introduction to Lovecraft for me. A man who‘s never seen outside climbs out of his “home” to see what awaits him in the world. Turns out it‘s not the world that‘s the surprise.

Beings must have cared for my needs, yet I cannot recall any person except myself, or anything alive but the noiseless rats and bats and spiders. I think that whoever nursed me must have been shockingly aged, since my first conception of a living person was that of somebody mockingly like myself, yet distorted, shrivelled, and decaying like the castle.
