Diary of a Tokyo Teen: A Japanese-American Girl Travels to the Land of Trendy Fashion, High-Tech Toilets and Maid Cafes
Diary of a Tokyo Teen: A Japanese-American Girl Travels to the Land of Trendy Fashion, High-Tech Toilets and Maid Cafes | Christine Mari Inzer
10 posts | 15 read | 15 to read
A book for comic lovers and Japanophiles of all ages, Diary of a Tokyo Teen presents a unique look at modern-day Japan through a young woman's eyes. Born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and an American father in 1997, Christine Mari Inzer spent her early years in Japan and relocated to the United States in 2003. The summer before she turned sixteen, she returned to Tokyo, making a solo journey to get reacquainted with her birthplace. Through illustrations, photos, and musings, Inzer documented her journey. In Diary of a Tokyo Teen, Inzer explores the cutting-edge fashions of Tokyo's trendy Harajuku district, eats the best sushi of her life at the renowned Tsukiji fish market, and hunts down geisha in the ancient city of Kyoto. As she shares the trials and pleasures of travel from one end of a trip to the other, Inzer introduces the host of interesting characters she meets and offers a unique and often hilarious look at a fascinating country and an engaging tale of one girl rediscovering her roots. **Listed as a 2016 Great Graphic Novel for Teens by the Young Adult Library Services Association**"

Such a fun art style, and it was fun seeing all of the things that the author found remarkable about her summer in Japan with her grandparents. Also loved the inclusion of photos throughout. I went Into this thinking it was going to be a narrative with a distinct story, but it was just a collection of observations which was fun too. #Japan #Tourism #TravelJournal #JournalComic

Whimsical graphic #memoir about a JPN-American teen returning to Tokyo for a visit for the first time since moving away when she was 10 y/o. I loved the then vs now commentary on how much her home-town had changed vs what hadn't. She chats about anxiety yet admiration for her culture. It was a great diasporic account of what it felt like to come home; how it felt overwhelming, yet very nostalgic. Great for ppl wanting to learn more about #Japan.

What a fun graphic memoir! Inzer chronicles her summer in Japan with warmth, heart, and an honest love for her grandparents' country. Her writing gets a little rough whenever she combines drawn-on-the-spot material with stuff she produced later, but that's a minor blip in something as enjoyable as this comic.

This was a super cute travelogue written by a teenager, in comic form. It was on display at the library, and I couldn't help but pick it up. 🍔🍱🍩

I really enjoyed this graphic travelogue/diary written and illustrated by Christine Mari Inzer. Her perspective on her visit to Japan seemed unique & fun. It was interesting to read about Japan from the point-of-view of someone who was born there, left at a young age, and returned as a teenager. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Japanese culture or graphic travelogues.

A really promising debut! It was interesting because it seemed that she drew this during her travels, so it had a different feel to it than the books that are more of reflections on life's events (ie. Lucy Kinsley). I look forward to seeing future books from her!
