Welcome to Litsy!

We‘re looking for a book to do a campus-wide book study in the fall (high school). We want something all students, faculty, and staff can read together. We‘re looking for a story the kids will get into that will lead to good discussions (character building, compassion, social justice, something). We‘ve had a few titles tossed because they deal with race (which is infuriating), but we‘re not giving up. This one is a contender. SUGGESTIONS?

Everyone should read this book. It is such a good teacher of humanity and kindness. There are 3 perspectives the are completely unique but you definitely will be able to relate to atleast one. It's about someone with a disability and 2 popular kids. Read it now!

I almost bailed on this little treasure multiple times but I stayed with it because I think that books like this are important. We need diverse books! Humans want to identify and feel included. I‘m not sure what made this sweet story so hard to read but I did enjoy the way that Emily and Belinda grew within the pages.

This book was a lot better than I expected it to be.

The story is told in dual POVs by Emily and Belinda. Belinda is a special needs adult who is bullied and assaulted one night and Emily and Lucas witness and don't do anything.

I liked how the author showed that Emily and Belinda are not extremely different when it comes to understand friendships and love. They both worry about the same things and overthink a lot.

Sometimes I think having friendships are harder than having a romantic relationship.

Lucas and Emily are high school seniors who are forced to volunteer at the Lifelong Learning Center after failing to help Belinda, a classmate with developmental disabilities. Emily and Belinda take turns narrating the story, and it's a wonderful story about acceptance and bravery. I loved spending time with these teens.

I thought this book provides a look inside the mind of someone with a disability in a way I have not was before. It was interesting to see the same actions from two different perspectives, when one was not neurotypical.

Emily has always been the kind of girl who tries to do the right thing—until one night when she does the worst thing possible. She sees Belinda, a classmate with developmental disabilities, being attacked. Inexplicably, she does nothing at all.

Disabilities are not something that needs to be hidden and this book focuses on how important it is to speak up, because not saying anything can be worse...

This book was EXCELLENT. I am so impressed with how effectively the author takes on the challenge of telling the story from the pov of a teenage girl with special needs.
