In Winter's Kitchen
In Winter's Kitchen | Beth Dooley

The explosive growth of the local food movement is hardly news: Michael Pollans books sell millions and the spread of farm-to-table restaurants is practically viral. But calls for a food revolution come most often from a region where the temperature rarely varies more than a few degrees. In the national conversation about developing a sustainable and equitable food tradition, the huge portion of our population who live where the soil freezes hard for months of the year feel like they're left out in the cold. In Winters Kitchen reveals how a food movement with deep roots in the Heartlandour first food co-ops, most productive farmland, and the most storied agricultural scientists hail from the regionisn't only thriving, it's presenting solutions that could feed a country, rather than just a smattering of neighborhoods and restaurants. Using the story of one thanksgiving meal, Dooley discovers that a locally-sourced winter diet is more than a possibility: it can be delicious.

Mehso-so

I‘m going to try to actually review my #bookspin picks this year. (We‘ll see how long that lasts.) this was between a pick & a pan, so I‘m giving it a so-so. I enjoyed her writing about food bringing people together. I did not like what I consider fear-mongering about GMO and conventionally grown foods. I think we need to have conversations about agriculture, but I find these types of arguments unhelpful.

TheAromaofBooks Great review!! 3y
Tamra I agree - fear mongering does nobody any good. All it does is close conversation. 3y

Pickpick

On my recent visit to Omnivore Books in San Francisco I knew I wanted cooking inspiration, but I sought it in the form of memoirs rather than cookbooks. These two books did not disappoint. I tag team read both Home Cooking and In Winter‘s Kitchen. Both have unique voices, and both convey their love and respect for food and the importance of eating well. Thanks to both, I‘ve renewed my long dormant home delivery of produce.

An excellent book about the history of food in the Midwest. Part memoir, part recipes, part foodie history. Just my kind of book. Going to make homemade applesauce tomorrow.
